TWU Dallas Fall 2014 Applicants

Published

This is for students applying to TWU Dallas for Fall 2014 :)

Hey guys! I noticed that there wasn't a Fall 2014 page yet... Probably because its not for another year but I thought I would start one!

I'm currently attending North Central Texas College and I'm about to start my last semester of required prereqs, and I'm taking a CNA class this fall!

I've attended an open house at TWU Denton & Dallas; I absolutely love the campus and the staff seems so friendly! I'm really excited to attend TWU. Hopefully I'll be in Dallas for the nursing program, but if life does not take me in that direction--I'll make my way for a Physical Therapy degree!

I'm sooo excited to start nursing classes and spend time in the hospitals. I'm on this website all the time and I hope there are some people on here applying the same time as me so we can support each other :-)

Tell me about yourself!

Does that include the Wknd program as well?

Would like to know what the schedule would be for the Weekend Program. If someone attending this program would be kind enough to share that info with me, or where I can find it I would greatly appreciate it Thanks!

If anyone is looking for cheaper text books, I'll sell my Patho book and the Study Guide together for $80.

My friend who is graduating this semester said she has used her patho book all four semesters, which is why I bought it rather than renting it. Just a thought, I would hate for you to have to buy it again!

Is there a separate page for TWU Fall 2014 Weekend program?

Hi Everyone!

I am super late on this but I've also have been accepted to the Dallas campus! :)

Stats:

1st attempt

4/4 First attempt A's

79 TEAS

3.70 GPA

See everyone at orientation!!!

Thought about it, I've had people in the program tell me they've used it again and some say they don't. Honestly I haven't even used it for this class (aside from reading the first 3 chapters which after her test I realized was a waste of my time). My home flooded a few weeks ago so my family needs the money now anyways. If I need to re-buy it, it will not be the most current anymore anyways so I don't think it will cost as much... And hopefully we will be in a better position financially. MacArthur said she's using it for Summer and Fall, then going to the next edition so it's still good if anyone wants it.

Hope my reply didn't come off rude by the way lol. Sorry, totally appreciate you helping out with the advice. Just re-read it and wanted to make sure I didn't sound mean haha.

Hi, y'all and welcome to TWU Nursing! I'm just finishing up my semester as a J1, so if you have any questions about the program, what to expect, etc., you are more than welcome to send them my way! Congrats on your acceptance! :cat:

Hello Ney,

After an overwhelming but exciting day at orientation, my brain is still spinning with questions. Could you please tell me more about your experience as a J1 student and some studying tips to prepare before the start of the program?

Thank you for your help! :-)

Sure! First off, let me tell you this: if you were and have always been an "A" student, you might want to come to terms with 'B's' being the new A's. This is nursing school; NOTHING can prepare you for what you're about to go through, believe me. That said, I don't want to scare you! TWU CON is the MOST AMAZING PLACE you could possibly be for a good, solid nursing education. The professors care deeply for each student and want ALL students to be successful.

My experience: I LOVE IT! I've made so many new, amazing friends and my professors and clinical instructors are the bomb! I'm not kidding! It can be so stressful at times, but you have about 120 other souls that most definitely identify with what you're going through. Frankly, I was terrified my first day of class. We got our student kits and I thought I was going to vomit, but you'll get through it. You're going to walk into class your first day and be completely clueless, but by the end you'll be so full of knowledge, you won't even know what to do with it all! You'll learn how to correctly assess a patient (a full head to toe that you'll perform in front of an assessment lab instructor), how to care for patients in the hospital (your first clinical you'll be shadowing a PCT, thereafter you'll be with a nurse assigned to your patient), you'll go to pre-clinicals, write care plans, learn all the nursing fundamental skills (urinary catheters, medication admin, injections, etc., etc.,), and at the end, you'll take the HESI fundamentals exam online. It measures just how much you've retained (A LOT!!!) It's overwhelming at first, but so rewarding when you get to pass your skills tests and actually do them on a patient! COOL STUFF!

BE EXCITED TO BE AT TWU NURSING SCHOOL! I can't congratulate you enough on getting in and deciding to come here. It truly is the greatest place to be. :-)

At orientation you should have had a chance to sign up for a mentor. If you didn't sign up for one, email them and get one! DO IT! My mentor was/is incredibly wonderful and I cannot imagine how I would have survived my J1 semester without her. She gave me all sorts of helpful tips, hints, etc. and calmed me down on more than one occasion. She will be an S1 this fall and will guide me through my J2 semester, just like she has for J1. :)

Tips: I think at orientation you should have met Dr. Tapler (pharmacology). She may/may not have said you need to read the first 8 chapters of the pharm book before class begins. You don't need the book. All her lectures come from the notes she puts up on blackboard. Also, go to tutoring for pharm. It's free and it's very helpful! As far as studying before classes begin, I would have to say that you should start looking over the chapters mentioned in your syllabi for each class; it will help come the first exam. Trust me, unless you've been in nursing school before, the type of testing you'll be doing is NOT knowledge-based, but critical thinking (ie., application). Yes, you need to know the material, but HOW you will use what you've studied is what you're tested on in every class. Start learning lab values (wbc, hgb/hct, k, na, bun, creatinine, etc.)! They will come up in Concepts and Pharm over and over again.

Get yourself a good care plan book; the recommended one (Mulanick/Meyers) is AWFUL. I suggest Nursing Diagnosis Handbook: An Evidence-Based Guide to Planning Care by Ackley. You can get it used for about $10. You definitely need the Jarvis Assessment book (get a used one from one of the former J1's- our final is Wednesday, so we'll all be selling them). You need SIM chart and HESI from Major's Books and I think the online videos for Concepts can be bought from there as well? I didn't get those videos online; I actually bought the DVDs from E-bay. With the exception of SIM chart and the HESI stuff, everything I purchased was used. Oh, and get comfy scrubs! You have to wear them during assessment lab and concepts lab as well as for clinicals. Scrubs and Beyond gives 10% discounts to students with their ids on top of whatever coupon you may bring in! Buy your steth online through Medisave! It's much cheaper and you can have it engraved. My Littman Cardio III, engraved, plus shipping and handling cost me less than $140.

And my BIGGEST tip of all: Don't stress about starting nursing school and what you should/shouldn't be doing/studying. I didn't study one bit before and I'm doing just fine. Enjoy your summer! You'll have plenty of time to stress AFTER the beginning of the semester. And again, congrats on getting into the greatest nursing school in the state! ;)

Hey Ney, thank you for all the good advise.

One thing I noticed was that you got the Littman Cardio III rather than the Littman Classic SE II. Could you please me why? I am still debating if I should get the recommended stethoscope or a better one.

Thank You
