TWU Applicants Spring 2011

Published

Hello Everyone,

Well I am currently looking to apply to TWU for Spring 2011. I thought it would be nice to start a thread because I am sure we will all need a good support system. The whole application process is so STRESSFUL!

Lets Get It Started!!!

Thanks MISMOE. So, how is your life at TWU goin? I read some of the 2010 thread and I don't recall how clinicals actually ended up? What about the ppl taking Patho right now, Have you noticed any bald spots? Do you guys study togther (those from the thread)?

MISSMOE

Oh, I meant to ask you if by pre-clinicals you mean that we will have to go to the hospital before each clinical day to pull our client's chart? Do we do that ALONE w/o the instructor? /and how may clients are we assigned?

I'm not worried, just curious. It's hard to say "oh just wait and see" and have it actually obeyed. We are all just anxious to understand at least a lil but of the unknown. When I started my ADN program I was real laid back, like whatever happens will happen. But this means way more to me and plus I'm curious about the similarities.

Hello! Ok, you will have to go to the hospital the day before clinicals to get your patients information. My group went alone without our instructor, but we went together, so that was a big help. Before you start going to the hospital for clinicals, you will have orientation. All intructors are different, so who know's what they will show you on orientation. My group went to ben taub and the day of orientation we went over the hospital's policies, visited the units we would be in, and looked around in our units to know where things were (like supplies, meds, linens, etc). You will only be assigned 1 patient. You will be in charge of changing their bed, helping with baths, and other daily living activities they need help with. Don't be afraid to ask if you can follow someone (RN or even a CNA) because you can learn so much!

gloworm26,

Missmoe is awesome person and I see she has been keeping you all informed! Sorry, I just noticed it said "missmoe" and I answered your question.

Missmoe if you read this, sorry, I was just so excited talking about clinicals :yeah:

There are free lunches during the meetings, guest speakers, group volunteer opportunities, T-shirts...just to add to the list above.

It is a GREAT organization to be a part of!

I love TWU...seriously, I get excited everytime I walk outside the campus! You more than likely didn't see anything about clinicals in the previous thread because we were too busy to type it all out. You will learn more about clinicals when the time comes. I know that is hard to hear seeing that you guys are probably excited and nervous and curious all at the same time. Regardless of what you might have heard about nursing school, TWU does a great job at easing you into the clinical experience. Remember, they assume that you know nothing about actual nursing and will prepare you with that in mind. They don't want to let you loose in the hospital with out any faith that you are somewhat prepared.

As for the people taking Patho, I encourage them when I can, but I am SOOOOOO glad I got that class out of the way. I could sugar-coat it but...if we "really" get to know each other you will realize that is not my style:D! I see alot of red-eyes, weight gain (not loss), hair twisting, and wrinkled clothing, but that is even with people that took Patho.

Everyone has different learning styles so it might be difficult to study in groups. Though I am good friends with those from the thread, I rarely see most of them because our schedules are so different.

Does anyone know if we get to choose our own scrubs? I found a website with some really cute scrubs I want to order...

Oh dsliver...lol. I appreciate everything and everyone who wants to help me on this journey. :yeah: THank you! So, we will not be given a nurse to shadow like automatically??? We are just there to be one patient's caregiver with no kind of guidance or structure?:lol2:

lol! yeah...that weight "gain" is a bummer!! I'm just more inactive now than before studies. YOu know, we just learned about the Nurse as the Teacher and the LEarner. One theory involved understanding learning barriers. Well, school deadlines and other clinical worries are def barriers between me and the track. I just don't think I have time to exercise, but we all know that exercise will make it better.

No we have specific uniforms we can wear. Maroon bottoms with white tops. Then we have to get a patch put on the shrit

Yup, you can pick whatever brand you want. They just have to be maroon/wine color. Depending on your clinical instructor, you may need a white top. I have the Gray's Anatomy brand, and they are infinitely awesome.
