I absolutely hate my current job and am looking to quit asap and am paid wrong, doing tasks below RN level ..etc (home health ...technically private duty really if you have any clue how horrible that field is)
I have an interview with an urgent care this week and exactly one week later a med surg hospital interview. I definitely want to get into the hospital so I'd choose that over urgent care.
What if I get offered the urgent care job before my hospital interview? They're both for the same health network but I'm just not sure how to handle it.
And I know you're supposed to give 2 weeks notice and typically I would but this place has used and a used me and I'd really prefer to give less than that but obviously I'm nervous to quit if I got the urgent care job and then go in for the hospital having already quit and not get a good reference. Do you think employers would understand? Probably not. I just want to do the best thing.
Haha and this is all assuming I'd get either job!! I sure hope so ....I will be so happy!

I get your frustrations I was in a similar position with the poor job, I would still give a 2 weeks notice so that your references check out. As don't give notice until you have a solid definite offer in hand.
You might not hear back from the urgent care clinic job right away, or maybe you will.
This is what I would do. If offered a position from the first job then accept it. Go to your second interview, if offered a position there then accept it and give notice to the urgent care job. Of course you wouldn't want to burn bridges at the clinic job, so just explain that you were offered an acute care position where you will learn more or something to that matter

I also would wait until you have a solid offer in hand, to give resignation. IF you are offered the urgent care job, just be honest and say you cannot commit immediately, as you have another interview in the coming week, although that could bite you in the butt as well. As far as being concerned about receiving a poor reference from your current position, most applications ask if it is acceptable for them to contact your current/most recent employer. And, I think by law, most places can only state if you are or are not re-hirable.

Firstly, there is no such thing as "tasks below RN level". Patient care is patient care and as a nurse, you are qualified to do any sort of care "RN level" or lower (including duties normally classified as "CNA work").
Secondly, if you are offered the urgent care position, go over the salary and other information with the hiring manager and then tell them you need to discuss it with your spouse and ask how long they'll give you to give them an answer. Then you can wait for the hospital to call and you can go over the same information and decide which one to go with.
Thirdly, make sure you give and take the proper notice. It will look really bad on your part to quit before you fulfill your required notice. This can affect future employment and the future employers are not likely to be understanding (we've all had jobs we didn't like); they may view it as "if they did it to xxx employer, they'll probably do it to us."

I don't mind doing things below the RN level in conjunction with RN skills. My agency literally assigns me cases that don't even require any RN skill ... I drive a client or cook for a client for example ... only two of my clients have been really in need of a nurse.They pay me as an LPN for most of my cases and I'm an RN (and the LPN pay is less than what I got paid when I WAS an LPN in a lower cost of living state ). So I hope my frustration is understood.
I'll probably just give 2 weeks but obviously im gonna be biting my tongue everyday. Well turns out both of my interviews are on the same day next week and at least urgent care if Not the hospital too know I have another interview that day! Awkward ... haha ...guess I'll just be honest about things..there's nothing wrong with interviewing with multiple companies, right ?

If you get the urgent care offer, ask to discuss it with your family for a few days ( or a week). Then when you have the hospital interview, during your thank yous and spiel about how great it would be to work here- tell them that you do have another offer that you need to decide on by x day but if the hospital offered you the job you would absolutely take it.
That worked for me :)
You can always accept the urgent care job, give your 2 weeks and then if the hospital job calls after the fact, you may have not even started at the urgent care yet-you may still be finishing you 2 weeks. In that case the urgent care hasnt yet poured a lot of money into training you. It is not good practice to commit to a job and then back out last minute, but it does happen.

i agree with giving 2 weeks. it is the typical professional norm and anything less looks like you have a personal issue with them. even if you do, you don't need future employers figuring that out.
like somebody already said, everything you do negatively to current employer resonates with a future one, because they figure if you'll do it to your current people, you'll eventually do it to them. i have been in situations where my frustrations and complete anger make me react in ways that i wouldn't normally, but I wouldn't want that to be my impression to my future boss.
make a clean start, look forward, be gracious and polite and walk away with no drama hanging onto your coattails. good luck!

Trust me: you need to give two weeks notice. You never know where your current managers will be working 10, 20, 30 years from now and you also never know if this agency will be bought out by a major hospital system in your area that you want to work for in the next several years. It is NEVER worth it to burn a bridge. NEVER.

I got offered both jobs!! Accepted the hospital one. :) the pre made schedule is almost done so I know it's not kosher but the hospital wants me to start orientation as soon as possible, so I'm giving one week notice. I know, I know .... and im sure I won't ever do this again ...but then again I won't ever take a horrible job again now,that I know what the warning signs look like. I'm sure I'm not the first to give less than 2 weeks and have it work out fine though. Now that I've made it to a hospital the unit I'm on can be a future reference as can be my first place of work as a nurse. I won't even put the work I'm leaving on my references on my resume after I leave.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm sure they'll find someone else to cook meals and chauffeur people that last week. Good luck and congrats!

My understanding is this a commonly believed myth. My understanding is that they can say whatever they want, as long as it's factual.
