Trump’s assault on Postal Service and voting is a plot against American democracy | Editorial
QuoteOn Thursday morning, after months of attacks on the United States Postal Service and vote-by-mail, President Donald Trump admitted that the two efforts are connected as a part of one voter disenfranchisement effort. In a Fox Business Network interview, Trump said that the sticking point for him in the negotiations over a new coronavirus economic relief package is Post Office funding: “If we don’t make a deal, that means they don’t get the money. That means they can’t have universal mail-in voting. They just can’t have it.”
BTW, one of my best friends who is black has always voted republican and his wife has always voted democrat. Last night at dinner, his wife Kathy told us for the first time in her life she would be voting republican. Joe Biden's remarks about "not being black if she didn't vote for him" changed her mind about the DNC. And yesterday at the polls, a young black couple in line to vote talked about why they were voting for Trump -amongst their complaints were the same as Kathy's -being taken for granted by the DNC and the fact that the DNC has gone against their personal values. Joe Biden is a puppet of the radical left, and many people who are tired of being taken for granted are voting against him. All of the sophistry and virtue signaling of the loud left wing is not going to win votes or change minds -nope it is having the opposite effect. People can see through the lies, deception, hatred, and subterfuge of the left. People are not buying it, and are fed up with adults having a temper tantrum like petulant children because Hillary got her butt handed to her by Trump in 2016. All the threats of violence and "getting back at Trump voters" are going to backfire in the worst way. People are not going to be bullied by the loud mouth threatening left wingers -people are taking a stand for freedom and justice. So put on your masks, social distance and prepare to be disappointed once again.

So they are closing voting locations? Or you don’t know and simply wanted to dispense a little snark? ( BYW, Seems to me you’re the one attempting to bully, with all the demeaning and sarcastic remarks)

Did you just come here to yawn? Are there any details in the articles that you think you can disprove? I haven’t read them, but I’m guessing neither have you. But if I was to declare them untrue I would of course read them first, so that I could support my dismissal of their accuracy with something factual. ”Yawn” is in my opinion intellectually lazy.
Even though you misinterpreted the CDC statistics, I’m still curious why you thought a 6% mortality rate is no big deal? Not even worth voting by mail to decrease the risk of catching the infection? I don’t know about you, but I am willing to make an extra effort to try to avoid something that carries a six percent risk of dying. Aren’t you? I’d also feel bad if I passed something that has a 6% risk of death to someone who’s perhaps more vulnerable than I. Would you feel bad if you did?
A six percent risk of dying is a high risk. I have an expensive and not entirely risk-free hobby. I parachute from airplanes. If jumping involved a six percent risk of dying, I would find myself a new hobby. How many things do you do on a daily basis that involves a 1 in 17 risk of dying? Since you’re fortunate enough to never have to eat my cooking ??, my guess would be none.
The mortality rate was incorrectly represented, but I’m still baffled by your easy dismissal of the risk when you thought it was correct.

In my area of Indiana, no polling places have disappeared, and my relatives who live in other areas of IN, TN, MS, KY, FL, GA, OK, MO, and TX say that they haven't lost polling places either, and no threat of it happening. These are a mix of Dems and Reps, so I don't know where they are being closed, and won't accuse one side or the other of stretching the truth. Having voted the day early voting opened in IN, I have turned off my political ears, all of the news anymore is of 2 crybaby teams screaming look what "x" did. I am truly wishing away the next week and a half so that the idiocy will stop

So are the two ”teams” and their respective track records and behavior equivalent in your opinion?

Very much so. Listening to the squawking from both parties is so irritating. I won't turn on any news channel anymore. If a political ad of any kind comes on TV or the radio right now, I turn the channel or turn it off. Trump and his camp's condescending attitude, with suggestions of cover ups is embarrassing at best. Biden and his team with suggestions of multiple cover ups and the holier than thou attitudes, with flip flopping on a few subjects are a turn off as well. I recorded and watched both Presidential debates, the VP debate, and the 2 town halls. Watching, and rewatching, the nuances and avoidance of answering basic questions from both sides is disheartening. So, yes, I do believe that they are overall equivalent. Quite a few people in both parties admit that neither choice is worthy of the office. This is per comments on FB, Twitter, etc, that are everyday average people. That, indeed, is a sad statement to be made about the state of politics in the US

I wanted to add, that a friend of mine made the comment that if we're going to have an old, crazy president, why can't it be Betty White. A little humor on a currently tense situation

For the sake of transparency: I’m a European which of course means I won’t be voting in your upcoming election.
We have elections every four years in my country as well. I never listen to the debates on TV for pretty much the same reasons that you listed. It annoys me no end that politicians of all stripes find it so difficult to give straight, clear answers. What I do is go online and look up there official policy platform and I go to town hall like events where I can ask my questions face-to-face.
However if we ever find ourselves in a situation like the one you’re currently facing, I wouldn’t have a need to ask a single question or listen to a single word any candidate had to say. The choice would be easy.
We have eight different political parties and are quite used to the election result necessitating a coalition in order to govern. The parties are roughly divided along the left to right continuum. I tend to vote to the right but if ”my side” ever allowed their leader to continue an assault on democratic values and institutions unimpeded, I would vote for the ”other side” in a heartbeat. I would figure whatever damage that government could do in the next four years (perhaps implementing policies that I don’t support) could be relatively easily fixed after the next election if the majority of citizens agreed with me. I think you’re overcomplicating things by watching and rewatching the details of the debates. This is a big picture election.
Rebuilding a democracy after it’s been broken and devolved into an autocracy can take a lifetime or more. And history shows us that is a process that always comes at a great cost and human pain and loss of life.
The writing on the wall is clear in my opinion. This is not an election between Democrats and Republicans. This is an election that will decide how your country will look like for decades to come. It’s an election that will show how the majority of Americans feel about their Constitution.
Many countries in Europe are becoming less free. Poland, Hungary and Turkey are examples.
What do you want for your country?

As of 10/15/2020: The population of the U.S. is 331,547,490 (U.S. Census).
According to CDC, the confirmed number cases of COVID-19 is 7,954,066 (or 2.3% of the U.S. population), with a mortality rate of 219,254.
So based on the numbers, COVID-19 only has a mortality rate of 0.0661304961% amongst the entire population of the United States.
While those at risk should take precautions the numbers don't justify the hysteria or shutting down the country.
Somehow it is safe riot and go to the big chain stores, but not to the polls. People are not stupid, and most people ain't buying it.
This is purely political; COVID has further expanded the partisan divide in this country as evidenced by this discussion.
Done with this stupidity. And listening to left wing nuts opine about nothing, and pretending to be more scholarly and intellectually superior to everyone else. This discussion has become boorish and pointless.
I know I am not going to convert a commie to capitalism and you sure as hell ain't going to convert me to communism.
So all you COVID Gruppenführers & Commissars have a nice day.
Bye-bye....

Okay... But you’re not really answering any of my questions. Of course you don’t have to, but why not do it? You’re spending time here, same as me, and took a couple of minutes to type the above reply. You could have made a serious attempt at a reply, but instead you went with Communism, left wing nuts and COVID Gruppenführers. Why?
Shutting down the country, which by the way I haven’t seen anyone in this thread advocate, is something entirely different than being allowed to vote by mail. Having the choice of voting by mail seems prudent in the middle of a pandemic. That gives voters the opportunity to choose which way to cast their vote suits them best.
The most recent numbers for Covid-19 deaths in the U.S. I could find is 68.46/100,000.
https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/mortality
When 68.46 turns into 100, 1 out of every 1,000 Americans will have died from this infection. Remember, we’re not even a year into this pandemic so there has been significant loss of life. In your country as well as in mine and many other.
As a nurse you also know that death isn’t the only possible negative outcome of a Covid-19 infection. Some individuals who have survived have sequelae and lingering symptoms. There’s also the problem that if too many people contract the disease at the same time, healthcare facilities could become overwhelmed. That would have a detrimental effect on both Covid and non-Covid patients.
So taking care to not spread the infection makes sense for all of us. Whether we are personally high-risk, or not.
