Travel to Abu Dhabi or Dubai?? Any advice?

Published

I am about to start Travel Nursing. I am starting in the states, but would eventually love to do International. Anyone every worked in Abu Dhabi or Dubai? Any and all information/advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, what Travel companies do international?

Post in the International area of this site. Tons of experience there.

Personally, wouldn't touch the middle east at all. I've had family members work there. They did it for the money and left.

You really should read the book "Paramedic to the Prince" first, it is a real eye opener! And conditions since then have only gotten worse.

I would stay the heck out of that area if you are an American, as it is very dangerous, and not worth the risk!!

I can hardly believe this actually has to be said!

You're right, it should be a given, but I thought I'd throw it out there. The glitz and glamour of the Gulf countries can gloss over the very real human rights problems there.

How so? UAE countries such as Dubai are far less extreme than Saudi Arabia or Iraq. Women have equal rights as men in Dubai. If OP has an interest she should definitely travel there, experience the culture and meet other Americans before forming an opinion. I have second hand knowledge from my brother who is former military and spent 2 years in Dubai and later went back as a Contractor. I know that he enjoyed himself. Income is tax free, so that's a plus.

Hmm. One of my nursing instructors worked in Dubai for a while. She seemed to have only positive things to say about it. I will have to ask her about it. I would love to go, as well- something my husband and I have been talking about.

The UAE isn't perfect but the western world can't be overly self-congratulatory, either.

From what I gather, UAE still has mandatory male guardianship over female relatives. Adult women have to ask for their guardian's permission to do certain things. Adultery, homosexuality and apostasy are all punishable by death, too. I don't think these things can be justified as cultural differences, they're just wrong.

But you're right, some Gulf countries are far more repressive than others, and it's not fair to group them all together.

Are you still thinking about travelling? Dubai is an ok place to live. So far, I have been in limbo for six months attempting to get my hands on a job here in Dubai. I have just been offered one today, fingers crossed it follows through. If you are thinking of coming to a Gulf country, try to secure a contract before you leave where you area already working! If you can find the right employer, the pay is alright and they usually provide accommodation and transport.
