I am taking an online BSN course (bridging from associate to bachelor) and I need to find an article on transcultural nursing from a christian perspective. I do not want to pay for the article. Our college library only has the information on-site. I cannot retrieve anything from Transcultural Nursing or Christian Nursing.

in my chapter on culturally diverse society there are some cultural resources - I don't know if they'll provide you with what you need, but here they are:

Cross Cultural Health Care Program (CCHCP)

EthnoMed Home Page

this one might not get through - I tried it but it didn't work for me - it's for general resources for a variety of ethnic and special population groups:

Well, since most nurses in the USA come from if not a Christian background, one that is heavily influenced by Christianianity it seems reasonable to that someone would be writing from this perspective.

As a person raised in the US in a Christian tradition, it has been important to me to realize that there IS a "Christian perspective" to begin with ... and that it is but one of many equally valid perspectives and may not be assumed to be the one that will (or should) dominate in a given situation. Being married to a Jew and mom to a biracial child has made such an awareness a matter of survival, in a way. I say hooray for that instructor! "The unexamined life ..." and all that! Fair warning, though: this line of inquiry can be a minefield and I have read a good bit of flat-out nonsense on the subject ... there is no substitute for critical thinking ...

All that being said, I have just one real suggestion. First of all, the only place I know of where one can reliably obtain access to free information is still in a library, although it sounds like the one you are using is limited. Other posters have given links that may help online ... but have you tried branching out into other disciplines such as cultural anthropology, comparative religions, sociology or even ( love that ivory tower! ) philosophy? You are unlikely to find material specific to nursing ... more likely food for your own thinking on the subject ... but there's nothing wrong with thinking for yourself! If I knew more about the specific assignment, I'd have a better idea of what else to suggest. Meanwhile...good luck!

Thanks to all of those who responded to my question. I am getting a lot of answers but I need actual journals. The one in particular is called Journal of Christian Nursing but it is only available at the Library location and not over the internet.:bluecry1:

I have found also that full text articles from the Journal of Christian Nursing are not available from the online databases I use. Here are two suggestions:

1) If you know the name of the article, you can probably order it from your school library or your public library through inter library loan. There is a fee, but it isn't necessarily very much.

2) Go to the Journal of Christian Nursing web site (google it) and browse through their archived issues. Each issue may have one free article--possibly one you can use. You can also order an entire back issue, but it is expensive.

The perspective I was coming from is that if you have a perspective, there might be a problem...perspective problem! I work with 40 different cultures and I "try" not to impose any perspective, although that is difficult at times since everyone has the "correct" perspective. If I were to use a christian perspective, (or any other perspective), would I then have a bias? This topic might get your class going, lol!

If you were coming from the belief that we all sinned and were cast out of the garden, you might confuse me since I was not cast out of the garden but was sent to be a caretaker of the garden. What did you do to get kicked out, bad boy?:chuckle

Everyone has a perspective and bias, that is one of the basic concepts of cultural competency. Some of the most dangerous people are those who do not realize their own bias. Now, being a non-Christian, the concept of "Christian Nursing" irks me. But if someone means by that the idea that they use their Christian beliefs to motivate and inspire their work to be good nurses (which I believe includes NOT imposing their beliefs on patients), then more power to them!

I wonder if the Christian Science Monitor would help at all. I know that it's not a nursing journal, but they do approach health issues from a unique perspective.

I also searched an LDS website (lds.org) for articles about nurses, because I know that Latter-Day Saints have done a great deal of work in other countries. Only found one article though, written in 1971 and not related to culture in nursing unfortunately.
