Tom Cruises' take on Psychiatry

Specialties Psychiatric

Published

I just finished watching the Today show interview that Matt Lauer did with Tom Cruise. I'm quite simply mystified by his take on psychiatry. He claims to know more about it than just about anyone, including those with medical degrees. I'm just curious about what others think about his vocal opinion on the subject. Am I crazy or does HE need a psychiatrist?

He is ignorant and closed minded and is letting his cult dictate his thoughts. Just as Michael Jackson is edging out of the news here comes another wacko to the forefront. It took guts for Brooke Shields to speak out about what she suffered through and she doesn't need him publicly criticizing something he knows nothing about. I have lost all respect for him.

It is absolutley this kind of opinion that causes people to feel they are even more of a failure for turning to medication and those that are not stable to refuse meds. One of my sisters is a borderline personality. She is 32, still lives with my mother, and refuses to take medication. Her "reasoning' is that medication isn't natural. I do not have the space on here to tell you everything my family and my mother have been through with her. I am sure if she sees this interview, it will add more ammunition for her to continue to refuse. When she is on her meds, she is a beautiful woman, with a great personality and fun to be with. As she is now, you never know. The mood swings are horrible, depression, frequent suicide threats, running away, I could go on and on.

Tom to me is entitled to his opinion. I will fully support his right to have his point of view, but he bears a huge burden of responsibility by placing himself out there as a role model (not that he is a role model to me in any way shape or form, but he is certainly using his celebrity as a platform to be heard). I say it is obvious he does not have anyone close to him that suffers from any form of mental illness. He would have a much different perspective if he did.

Now, for my red-headed opinion, I say Tom looks to me like he might be in a bit of a manic phase, with some delusions of grandeur going on! :chuckle

I concur . . . .

My red hair is painted on :coollook: however I completely agree with everyone's assessment of Tom's inadequacy regarding mental health issues. Just the fact that I can pick up a Newsweek and read about the genetics involved and the hormones and neurotransmitter pathways means he is very ill-informed. I learned this basic stuff in nursing school but the average joe can just read about it in Newsweek or Scientific America.

I was very fired up about this when I heard about it, too. I was furious when I heard Tom Cruise talk about "psych meds" and there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance. I used to really like him, but I have totally changed my mind about him. He is just plain goofy, these days. Really, he acts as if he is on something. It is nauseating. It seems as he "acting a little too happy". I was wondering, if perhaps he is a "closet gay". I have heard rumors of that nature. I did not believe it, but now I wonder. It just made me wonder with all of his public display with Katie. But, I am getting off subject here. (My ADD kicking in)

lol. I hope the public does not take him seriously. I have worked in psych, have a schizophrenic brother, and a bipolar daughter. His remarks just hit close to home. But, he is just ignorant. Okay, I've donated my two cents, and I'm done.

The media has a way of boosting a celebrity's ego, then after things are looking good for the celebrity, along comes the media to burst their overinflated ego. :rotfl: Tom is on cloud nine. I surely hope his happiness is for real for his children's sake as well as for Katie Holme's sake. Meanwhile, I would prescribe some Valium to calm him down. :rotfl: Tom? O Tom? Take your meds now. Doctors orders. :rotfl:

Did anyone hear on the news today the study that shows MEN also suffer from post partum blues? Tom should watch out. He may be one of those men down the road if Katie does have children with him. :uhoh3:

It's kind of a rule I have... I don't take advice on psychiatry from actors and I don't pay $10 a pop to watch my shrink in a movie...

I read the transcripts of the interview with Matt Lauer. I certainly respect Mr. Cruise's right to believe what he wants to believe, regardless of how incorrect it is. However, to publicly spout his beliefs as fact is very dangerous. I can only hope that the good sense of the Today Show audience helps them to recognize the ramblings of an unqualified, ill-informed, publicity seeking actor. He's hardly an expert in Psychiatric Medicine, despite his claims to the contrary.

I saw that interview just now on "Insider". :uhoh3: He was getting angry with Matt for having his own opinion about psych meds. Tom has a lot of nerve that may just weaken his stardom as an actor if he doesn't get a grip! He's more than giving his opinions (free speech), he is insulting everyone else's opinions and beliefs about psych meds and the necessity of taking them for those who need them. He is embarrassing himself, and he doesn't even realize it. Poor guy.

I always thought tom cruise was pretty cool but now he has come out acting like a 13 year old that just hit puberty with katy holmes, and then he comes out acting totally narcistic about anti depressants and meds for adhd. He obviously has never known or lived with anyone with any sort of depression or mental illness. I was actually listening to hear his veiws and learn what sceintology was all about until he came off pretty mentally ill himself. i was thinking he possibly suffers from narsistic and anti-social personality myself:rotfl: :chuckle :rotfl: :chuckle . The only thing I really hate about it is mental illness already gets a bad enough wrap, without more negativity directed toward it.:uhoh3:

Well I finally just watched the interview . . .. .I have to say that I think he did have a point about ADHD drugs because I do think they are overprescribed. It seems like nowadays people have these unrealistic ideas about life, kids, etc. It is amazing to me how many young married couples are shocked that their babies don't sleep through the night. Or that toddlers are busy little people getting into things. Or that boys have a harder time sitting still than girls. And sometimes we end up listening to "some" teachers who think we need to drug our kids into sitting still. I knew a couple who took their kids on a vacation to Hawaii and ended up giving them Dimatap in order to get the kids to sleep so they could go out and party.

I'd be interested in what his research says about psychiatry.

But I still do believe that there are genetic and chemical things going on to cause mental problems. So I think he is wrong about that.

I wonder if Tom Cruise would change his opinion if he had a mentally ill loved one?
