TLC Special Duggar Family

Did anyone happen to catch The Learning Channel's documentary about the Duggar family of Arkansas? It ended with Ms. Duggar birthing their 15th

baby :uhoh3:

I think big families are great. My pregs get too complicated and dangerous.

Good for them. I don't see anything "strange"about the fact that they have so many kids. They seem like a loving, sweet family.

They have a great system. God bless 'em.

:) I AGREE. I WOULDN'T MIND MOVING IN WITH THEM A WEEK OR TWO ,SO I COULD LEARN A FEW THINGS ABOUT ORGANAZATION AND EFFECTIVE PARENTING...:) :) :) P.S. I HAVE BAD PREG. TOO OR I WOULD HAVE HAD ABOUT 6,NO JOKE...:)

Hey, to each their own. As long as those kids are well cared-for, educated, fed, and I am not paying to raise them, it's their business. More power to em.

I agree with that.. the only thing I wondered about is the "church" they attend in their living room with ONE other family(sounded almost cultish even though the family admittedly seems well adjusted), and I also wondered whether the kids were exposed to people who live a more mainstream lifestyle (since they are homeschooled and I had the idea that they mostly played with the kids in the other "quiverfull"/church family). I wonder if they participate with other kids in the community in sports and other activities? I'm all about homeschooling (I've seriously considered it myself), but I don't like it when it is used to shelter kids from the real world. I would be afraid my kids would grow up, see how average people live, and decide to rebel from all I'd taught them, KWIM? I also doubt the older girls really like wearing the homemade holly hobby dresses, but whatever.

Overall they seemed happy, responsible, and well-adjusted. I can't believe her uterus hasn't fallen out! LOL

But who am I to judge? Their day seems more orderly and happy than ours and we just have three kids!

More excerpts:

"But even by standards of an average Christian household, the Duggars are extreme.

"The girls exclusively wear dresses and skirts.

The children wear wet suits instead of bathing suits when they go in the water in order to be modest."

"Though the family owns a TV, it's rarely on, even when their father makes an appearance."

They have a bumper sticker that says ""Evolution is a Lie: Save America Please."

"Jim Bob, a 36-year-old lifelong Springdale resident who has been known as a one-issue politician--a conservative Republican who cares only about stopping abortions."

"The 7,000-square-foot family project [they are building a house themselves] will have 10 bathrooms, master and guest bedrooms, a laundry room with four washers and eight dryers and two dormitory-style bedrooms, one for the boys and one for the girls. Those rooms will have bunk beds, Jim Bob Duggar said, easily added for any new children."

Mitchsmom,

I had the same thoughts as you did about the home church and homeschooling! It seemed a little too sheltered, and that's why they struck me as strange.

Specializes in ICU, CCU, Trauma, neuro, Geriatrics.

They could start a teaching program on how to plan families and parenting classes too.

Thanks for the links MitchsMom.......scary. I am not impressed. I think the closer you look at this situation the more offensive it gets...(at least to me).

P.S. Is that your little guy in your icon? Cute!! :)

I saw this and immediatly thought CULT-like. I think they are nice people and am impressed by how polite their kids are but this is way too sheltered. The girls all wear those dresses with blouses and the boys dress oddly as well. I think it's great that they have a loving family, but kids have to grow and learn on their own as well. Missed the 2 family church part, glad I did b/c thats even creapier. It also alarmed me that all of the girls' only goals were to have a big family too....thats really cool to do that (and I have HUGE respect for SAHMs), but most kids have other goals as well...to travel out of arkansas for one, go on vacations, go to college, etc. SOOOOOO WEIRD, I watched it again today for a second time, kind of like watching a car accident...sickly facinating but makes you shiver and shake your head. I hope these kids turn out ok.

ok ewww, just saw the white "pride" website link that praised the family. (no flames, i'm caucasian too).

I got a very strong feeling that there's a *very* disturbing agenda at play here.

Cults and this family have a lot in common: confirmity (dress), rigid routines,

punishments for deviating or questioning the leader (of course TLC isn't going to show or imply that!), and isolation from the outside world. I think everyone but Jim Bob is a robot.

I believe they are all brainwashed.

I hope that at least one of those adorable children makes it out of that family and larger milieu and writes a book.

This family really freaked me out. The mom said every child had a "buddy" to help them, and that she was the baby's buddy until it was weaned. They seemed like nice enough people and can provide food and clothes for their kids but their house is run like a small, Christian boarding school. I also thought it was very sad when they all asked the girls what they wanted to do when they grow up. And every single one said they wanted to have as many children as God would give them. Or they wanted to be a mom of 15 kids. Not one mentioned going to school, or having any type of career. It just seemed like a very cult like and unusually sheltered life. I feel sorry for all those kids.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Jim Dugger was a congressman from Arkansas too I believe. I watched it also and thought glad that it wasn't me. My two boys, spaced intentionally five years apart gave me enough time to devote to them and they didn't need a "buddy" either - they had a mom and dad.

I saw the show. I was not at all impressed w/ the family. Cult-like?? Oh yes.

I'd love to have them do a followup in 10 yrs or so... see how those kids turn out.

Some how I was not surprised to see that dad was an elected official in his part of the world...

Having grown up in a lg family, all I can add is there are public views of the family and then there are the things that go on that no one sees:cool:
