Three Flu Shots This Year; Will You Get Them?

"Most people will need one shot for the regular seasonal flu and probably two others to protect against the new swine flu.

For the regular flu vaccine, elderly people, health care workers and pregnant women are among the priority groups. For the swine flu vaccine, health care workers and pregnant women are on the list but not older people, who seem to have some immunity to swine flu."

More than likely, yes....if they don't run out first! I get a flu shot every year. Not only to protect myself, but my family (husband has asthma), students, and patients I come into contact with. I guess I'm one of the "older" people with some immunity, since I was around in 1976! Still, I plan to get them.

I won't be happy if I'm "mandated" to get them, though.....even though I still probably would.

That is a great point about protecting those vulnerable folks around us - the kids with asthma, etc.

I probably will too.

And I'm not crazy about being told what to do . . . . . I'm older too and grew up when the main idea was:

Yeah, my husband gets seriously sick with any kind of respiratory illness. It takes him twice as long (as me) to recover.

I have a friend whose two children have asthma and she works for Public Health too and is a big advocate for flu shots . ... to protect the folks with decreased immunity or susceptibility to illness.

I'll get my flu mist. But the swine flu vaccine...I doubt it.

You might as well get vaccinated because the N95 mask may not be in use by October if these recommendations in the link below are fully accepted by CDC, excepting for certain procedures. That leaves you with only the surgical mask for protection right about the time the first vaccinations may be given out. Of course, it will take some time to develop antibodies...

Some nurses on these threads are already reporting that they are using surgical masks (Syracuse, NY area).

Yep. I'll get whatever is recommended as soon as I can get it. I work in a Children's Hospital and my office suite is directly across the hall from the oncology clinic. The last thing those kids needs is for me to bring any influenza into their vicinity. In fact, my hospital is considering making the seasonal flu vaccine mandatory this year -- and I suspect they will do the same for whatever Swine Flu vaccine they get for high priority staff.

I also care about the people I come across in the grocery store, the mall, my neighbors, etc. I don't want to be spreading it around the community.

As you can see, I am a big believer that we all have an obligation to increase the "herd immunity" of the community and keep the levels of infection down as much as we can.

Still a bit concerned about the swine flu vaccine. There are no long-term reports/studies available. No one can be certain there wont be serious long-term effects. If every other drug or vaccine remains unavailable for 10-15 years due to studies and trials, how can they maintain that this vaccine will be safe with less than a year since swine flu hit the news? Either they knew about it long before we did, or they purposely and uneccesarily delay all other meds.

Is it just me? Not much into herd mentality or believing because Big Brother says I should.
