This week, I have learned....
1. Meth is a hell of a drug.
2. When meth is combined with cocaine and booze, it can destroy a 28 year old heart.
3. When you have one random patient across the unit from your other patients, and that patient is the only patient without psych issues, that poor patient is unfortunately going to be a bit neglected.
4. A discharge with EMS transport, ICU transfer and admission happening simultaneously (literally all less than 5 minutes apart from one another) 2 hours before you're supposed to be giving report means you'll be giving report before your last round of (very late) meds will be given.
5. Never been happier for vacation time. (Today is day 4/15.)
6. All play and no work makes ixchel a very happy girl. :)
That's all I got this week! Not much to learn when all I've been doing is playing! :)
What have you learned this week?
When I got mine I learned to keep my mouth shut when an obvious troll posted something extremely odious and let the mods handle it.I stayed low for a few days to get my chakras aligned and get my funny back. But I feel MUCH better now! 😘😇
See that's the thing, I've gotten into it with some people & never gotten a warning. I didn't get into a fight with this person. It was just a comment, a silly one at that.
I learned that even when your patients have psych issues out their ears, they *will* notice your attitude and they *will* respond to it. My end stage COPD patient was at our IPU for her first night in hospice, and she has a long hx of bipolar, schizoaffective disorder, and anxiety. She'd been there since 1 pm, and I was still fighting the pharmacy at 2 am for her 400 mg of Seroquel, plus Xanax, Valium, etc.; all meds she's been on for years and is a little attached to. This woman must have hit the call bell every half hour asking for everything under the sun, including, "Is my medicine here yet?" She was making me crazy, but I held on to my composure for dear life because hell, it's not her fault our pharmacy is incompetent. Finally got a delivery of PRN Xanax so she could relax a little. She told dayshift the next day how comfortable I made her feel and how kind I was while she was waiting and feeling so anxious. I'm glad she thought so; I'm sure the pharmacy felt differently. I've had a lot of psych-esque patients lately who were really draining, and it meant the world to hear that she perceived that.
I learned to have a new appreciation for q-word nights, because they are becoming a rarity!
I learned that I am capable of working 56 hours overnight in 6 days, but that I really don't want to ever again. (We'll see how that paycheck makes me feel, though.)
I learned that four nights off in a row sounds like a lot, until I account for all the time I'm going to spend unconscious.
I learned that my *ss will never be the same now that I work nights.
