This week, I learned (7/18).....

Nurses General Nursing

Published

1. All work and no play for seven straight days makes ixchel a mean girl. I think I may owe some apologies when I go back to work. :(

2. A young person is capable of being hypoxic to anoxic for so long their brain swells before their heart stops. (Particularly when they've had a lifetime of ignored asthma exacerbation so to get used to chronic hypoxia.)

3. Regarding said person, I have many cuss words for the people who could have done more for her.

4. Pools get slimy fast.

5. This person exists: VITAS - Седьмой элемент / The 7th Element - YouTube

6. I love the pet therapy thread! (If you haven't seen it, go to my profile and see threads I've started. I think it's the one I started before this one.)

7. I'm attempting to go off caffeine. I'm an idiot.

8. I want to be an FBI agent. Mulder and Scully just make it look so damn cool.

9. Apparently, a wonderful perk of working for a hospital is a fast-acting employee health department. It's good to know my potential HIV and Hep status quickly after a needle stick.

10. Press Ganey did not ask questions I hoped they would ask on our survey.

11. I'm not okay with the waxing and waning of adequate staffing, especially when they have yet to actually "officially" change the staffing requirements for my unit to what they "officially changed it to" two years ago. NOT COOL. This is actually what led to number 1.

What have you learned this week?

Um, I'VE had a bad day TOO, ya know, Dubya.

What's going on dearest?

I actually loathe mixed drinks like that. I was just being a brat.

Ood, my heart is with you. I know how deep of a shock this is, but the shock does fade. If it helps you at all, your boy is the same boy he was last week, with all of the joys and tribulations he presented before. The difference is, having a way to label behaviors that prompted you to seek help in the first place means you have this word that unifies you with a community.

You have a word that can be used to find support. You have a word that comes with it many resources for how to cope as a person in his life, and as a mom. As the shock of this word fades, you'll see that the word has opened a world of doors to help with things that were a struggle before this label was part of your world.

Early diagnosis and early intervention is so, so important with pediatric diagnoses. Many brilliant people are on the spectrum. I know you'll have complicated days ahead, for for every single one, I offer you a great big mama hug. Your boy is beautiful and complex. You can do this.

This. Absolutely. After many years of supporting families, both newly diagnosed (with a variety of disorders) and those who were veterans of the merry-go-round, this is probably the most poignant summary I've ever seen. Ood, most sincerely, if there is anything I can do to support you online, I'm here! Thinking of you and hoping for abundant, capable resources to help you on this journey.

Unrelated: this week I learned that despite my somewhat unflappable exterior at work, people *will* push my buttons and I *will* have thoughts of "give up or try harder?" Tough realization with no one particularly trustworthy to help me navigate this new vulnerability.

I learned that some of my better friends are becoming people on AN.

Gosh why am I so socially awkward lol.

But seriously, some of you make my day. OCNRN63, Farawyn, Purple_roses, cracklingkraken, OrganizedChaos, just to name a few.

Awwww. It's ok, I've spent most of my time on here after becoming a stay at home mom & getting rid of my facebook. Haha! I wish I could hang out with a lot of you guys!
