This Blows Every Other ED Visit Out of the Water

A new all-time #1 has surfaced for me and my career and I'd like to share...

Young adult male presented to the ED last week with pain and swelling throughout various parts of his body. This kid injected multiple syringes of his boyfriend's semen into himself. The worst part? He was trying to get pregnant. Psych cleared him and he was admitted to the hospital. Mind=blown.

Unless boyfriend doesn't know and this guy is getting it from used condoms. I've heard of women doing that to get pregnant when the man didn't want her to.

Haha...that scenario, which seems to be much more likely, never once crossed my mind.

Nothing about this every crossed my mind. I know some people are sexually ignorant...especially when it come to STDs and pregnancy, but wow!

That's the last time I'll ever say "oh please, this wont be that shocking" when I read a thread title ...

I'm completely speechless. Psych clearing him is also mind boggling.

I have had several patients injecting various substances into themselves. A recent patient injected bleach into her abdomen. This one is rather bizarre though. We also have a frequent flyer that stabs his abdomen with ball point pens and various other sharp items and shows up in the ED with these items in place.

Update! A PA today told me that at one point he said 'I should have went with my original plan and tested it on the dog first.(!) I assume he wasn't enjoying the abscesses all over his body... This even furthers the shocking fact that psych cleared him.
Okay! You win!

I have been at his game a LONG time and that is a new one for me!! I have nothing that tops this....my new "guess what I heard today!"

Lacking education or common sense isn't a psychiatric hold. Nor is being crazy....unless harmful to self and others.

Wouldn't this count as being a harm to self?

I think the wording is slightly different... rather than "harmful to self and others," use "an imminent danger to self." That is, either (a) actively trying to gravely injure themselves, or (b) gravely disabled... meaning unable to discern reality from delusion or hallucination in a manner that creates an obvious danger or unable to care for themselves (not unwilling... unable).

Consider that all manner of choices that people make are harmful to themselves or place them in danger... but if they have any insight into what they're doing, then they're making a choice for themselves.

In our current social, political, and economic climate, the bar to have someone held against their will -- or to take them in as a ward of the state (or payor) -- is very high.
