Ugh! Feeling a little frustrated today with some other newbie nurses (I am one myself). As part of orientation, we have several tasks that we have to complete and classes to attend. I find them very beneficial. However, it seems there are one or two immature individuals that insist on complaining, degrading, disregarding, and disrespecting every lecture, inservice and instructor/guest speaker that we have. It was easy to ignore at first, but now it seems it is spreading to other previously satisfied new grads who want to be part of this little group. Sometimes, I wish I could just speak my mind, but it would not be very professional...
- Yes, it is important that I know how to read EKGs forwards, backwards, and sideways in case my pt has a rhythm change and I need to intervene. :trout:
- Yes, I do need to know how to interpret ABGs even though we always have a respiratory therapist, because there are other assessment findings that I must take into consideration when providing treatment.
- Yes, I do want to learn how to read a 12 lead even though the diagnosis is generated at the top of the page...it is not always accurate.
- No, I don't want to have to move closer to hear the instructor/speaker because you want to gossip about how much you drank this weekend, your friend from highschool that got arrested, or which doctor you think is hot. I happen to think hemodynamics is an important aspect of critical care.
- No...I don't chart before I do something, I do follow the 'stupid' protocols, and I do take notes during these classes and read up on the newest recommendations outside of work. That's because I value my license.
- No...I don't know how you made it through nursing school either. :trout:
I guess I am just having a bad day. But being around this group for a few days reminds me of highschool too much. It's like watching an episode of the hills on MTV. :trout: It appalls me that some people lack such maturity and professionalism, yet choose an advanced area of practice. And then claim, they are going to apply for CRNA school after a year. Good luck with that when you don't even know the oral care protocol or why it's done.
if you don't do your job right, and i have a problem with that, it's not because i don't like people of your particular skin color, native language, national origin, religious affiliation, gender, or any other extraneous factor.it's because when you screw up your job, you make mine much more difficult, and because you seem to find new and innovative ways to screw up on a daily basis.
i don't care if you are purple with yellow stripes and green polka dots, have three pink heads with orange hair, and speak martian in your off time. i care that you do your job correctly so that mine goes more smoothly.
i wish i had a dime for every time i've bitten my tongue to keep from saying that!
I would like to tell the day shift:Please sit down and shut the f*** up. I want to give report and get the h***out of here on time for a change!!!!!
In my hospital, it is night shift that does this. Not all the staff actually - just a couple of the nurses. And then their reports are lengthy and filled with non-essential stuff. I get to work at 0245 and I want to get my day started and not sit around listening to gossip.
I think there are a couple of those wordy nurses on day shift too.
steph
Hmmmm...things i wish i could say. I guess there are many, but here is one topic:Dear co-workers,
Why do you sit there at the nurses stations complaining about how much work you have to do, and how we are short staffed and it is unfiar, for an entire hour at the start of the shift. Perhaps you do not realize that you have just wasted an hour of your time that may have been spent accomplishing a few of the things that you say you don't have time to do!
Now, kindly shut the f*** up and get to work.
Thank you,
Your co-worker
May I quote you???
I know you can't manage your time and leave 3 hours late every day, but I like to leave on time. Give me report already!I want report, I do not want a play-by-play of everything the resident said, ate, and did or did not do. If I want to know if they pooped, I'll look!
To one special nurse: I know you think nightshift doesn't do anything, but please stop passing off your work on me every single night we work together. I thank the Lord every time I don't have to work after you. ---Oh, and when you talk to yourself the whole time you're charting, it makes me want to tear my hair out.
--rant over--
i like this thread!

Wish I could tell my manager to leave the strong, cloying perfume AT HOME please.
I can tell my coworkers what I need to, I am usually very honest but kind. But this issue of my manager's perfume? Having a bit harder time with that. I HATE going near her or her office due to this. I am rehearsing what to say in my head, because I find it that bothersome and really need to say something.
Estee Lauder's "Youth Dew" may be great at the opera, but in the hospital? No thanks!
:trout: Picture this, 3 nurses sitting at a desk, complaining (rightly) that an administrator chose to take all the cnas off the floor (for an hour and 15 mins!!!) for an inservice. Bells going off both hallways, like christmas. Guess who answers the bells while they *****-me! Saying its unsafe, won't get my break(while eating at the desk) poor patient care, etcThen they dissapear sp? off the floor, again leaving ME (one nurse, no cnas to 50 people) Can you say HIPPOCRATES?!
Pent-up frustrations with a certain floor on our hospital I used to work regular on...
No, your surgical floor is NOT the hardest floor in the hospital. Yes I see you are busy with your 5 pts, but I know that cardio/telemetry just got slammed with 4 pts at once downstairs and onc upstairs has several circling the drain. If your coworker is having difficulty why not help her yourself instead of expecting the house float to answer your call lights, give meds, check your orders, etc., while you sit and gripe about how the floats don't understand how hard your floor is. Do you not understand the concept of teamwork? Gimme a break. Then you wonder why we avoid your floor.
In the time it took for you to stand at the freakin' nurses desk for 3 minutes griping about how a nurse aide needed to fill your ice bags, you could've filled 'em yourself and been done with it.
Would it kill you to take an admission yourself instead of dumping 'em on everybody else all the time? No wonder you want to be charge all the time.
Just because you're an >*RN* doesn't mean you are too important to put a pt on the commode or bedpan, empty a urinal or clean up an incontinence. Don't tell the nurse aide to teach your febrile pt to use the inspirex and cough and deep breath while you sit, do it yourself.
Just because I'm a float doesn't mean you can dump on me. It just means I'll remind the other floats why you are difficult to work with.
Answer your freakin' lights! I am not going to do all your work for you. Get your beeping IV, I've got issues of my own to attend to. If I get all your beeps and lights, who's getting mine?
Okay, I feel a little better now.

I appreciate the need to vent and this thread is a good way to do so. However, I must ask the participants to refrain from using thinly-disguised foul language to get your point across. Simply placing an * symbol in the f-word for example, is not necessary. This is a PG-13 site, and per Terms of Service, foul language, and poorly-disguised foul words are not allowed. There are several posts with this sort of content in them in this thread.
Thanks for understanding and helping to keep allnurses.com a flame-free and friendly place to visit!
I would say..
I am sick of hearing about your crappy or otherwise sex lives. Come on, don't whine to me about not, "getting any" cause you aren't the only one! And the whole " Me and my spouse aren't getting along" thing is so OVERDONE. I am not your counselor. Please invest in a marital psychotherapist who is not employed in our department.
And a personal pet peeve- If you wear a thong, can you please make sure you wear suspenders too? The sight of your backside is unsightly and unprofessional.
That's all folks!
