I was just wondering, since I hope to be starting a new grad program in the very near future.....
What are the things that new grads do that really get under your skin?? Have there ever been times that a new grads judgement/critical thinking skills (or lack there of) have scared the pants off of you??
Just wondering...... :)
Just thought someone may want to vent on this one, I would love to hear it, since I want to avoid being one of those nurses like the plague

To me, the scariest thing a new grad can do is not ask questions when they don't understand, and cover up a mistake. I've never really seen a new grad do anything that caused serious harm to a patient.

Were you ever a new grad or you skipped through it?
Been a nurse 3 years and I still vividly remember how it felt like so am not going to be quick to pick on new grads...they are learning!!!
I have seen nurses with years of experience do really unsafe things at work. And I have seen New grads who I would want to take care of me if I were sick.
Being a good nurse is individual not categorical.

I am a new grad
I'm not looking to get picked on, I just don't want to go into my first nursing job and unknowingly do things to **** off the nurses
I just want to start off on the right foot because I feel that teamwork is essential for a companies productivity and an employees satisfaction

There isn't a thing scarier than a new grad (or any nurse) that thinks they know it all and have all the answers. Scary scary scary!

Actually us old farts ( five or so years and beyond ) can be either so complacent or so stuck on old and incorrect ways, we are just as if not more dangerous than a new grad.
Thank you for your candor
I will always ask if I am unsure

I had one ask me whether she should answer the call light of a rather demanding patient (you know the "can you fluff my pillow" q5min) or assist the patient who was aspirating banana pudding thanks to a resident's "bedside swallow study" So remember airway ALWAYS comes first

The one big scary for me was new grads that won't ask questions when they don't know. Sure fire way to put a patient in harms way!

It's so good to hear that questions are welcomed, I am always asking if I am unsure of anything.....
I just don't want to come across like the dreaded pt who's got their finger glued to the call light
lol
