Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.

Just curious as to what you would say. Mine goes something like this: Nurses Relations Video Nurse Life

Updated:

Hi, my name is AngelfireRN, I'll be your nurse tonight.

I am not a waitress, nor am I your slave.

Yelling and hurling obscenities at me will not get you your pain meds any sooner than they are ordered. Nor will having your family member or entourage do the same.

Threatening lawsuits and having umpteen family members camp out in the halls or hold up the nurse's station will not get you preferential treatment.

Physically grabbing me as I go down the hall is NOT a good idea.

I do not give the orders, but I do have to follow/enforce them. This is something that you should take up with your doctor.

No, I will not call him again to ask him for more pain medicine. He has been called twice and has said no both times.

No, I will not give you his number so you can "straighten him out".

No, you are not my only patient, and I highly doubt that you are single-handedly paying my salary. On the off chance that you are, let's talk about a raise.

NO, NO, NO, I most empahatically will NOT come get you when it is time for your next pain shot while you are having a smoke break. I also will not bring it to you in the smoking room. (Have actually said that, I am allergic to cigarettes. I did it once, had an asthma attack, desatted to 83, and turned blue, according to the patient and my charge nurse, after the patient had to help me back to the floor).

No, I don't really care if your family has not eaten all day, they drove here by themselves, they are not sick, and no, I will not call for 6 guest trays. (This of course, is if the patient in question does not need all 6 family members present, and is not at death's door).

No, you may not have 3 six-packs of soda from the kitchen, there are other people that would like a snack, too.

No, they will not open up the kitchen up just for you, at 1 in the morning, because you don't like the snacks we have on the floor.

I could think of hundreds, but those will do for a start. I know it sounds mean, but this is why I got out of bedside nursing. When a hospital becomes the Hilton, I'm gone!

Have fun!

To the morbidly obese, diabetic, three-pack-a-day-cigarette-habit, 3L-round-the-clock-O2-toting patient:

Stop smoking! Don't tell me how difficult it is for you to breath and that the doctor isn't doing anything for you when you walk into our office smelling like you've been locked in a room for two weeks with 500 smokers!

Start walking yourself back and forth to the kitchen instead of being waited on hand and foot by your adult children.

Once you have that mastered, start walking back and forth to the mailbox; around the outside of your house; ANYWHERE! Just walk!

Here is a list of the foods that you MUST stay away from. Remove these items immediately from your house.

Do all of these things and your little O2 buddy will go bye-bye!

My mother in law is in the hospital in Oklahoma (I'm in SE Texas)..... she has COPD, Right sided heart failure, massive ascites, and massive fluid overload. She went into the hospital with K= of 5.8, in diuresing her they removed several liters of fluid and in 3 days she was down to k+ 3.3..........

They were still diuresing her because she needs atleast 40 more pounds taken off... and my LOVELY SISTER IN LAW, who since she took care of her dad while he was dying, thinks she KNOWS EVERYTHING,,,, and is up there acting like a damn fool in front of the nurses/doctors.

She absolutely refused the potassium supplements that they ordered when her K+ got down to 3.3......

Here's what I want to tell her..

"WHAT!!>!>!?? So, it IS TRUE, you DO want to kill her!" hahahaAAAAAAAA

lol

But, really, I told her... "honey,, think about it.. if her potassium dropped that far in two days with the lasix,, think about how far it might drop tonight if you don't let them give the potassium every six hours like the doctor ordered. "

She thought just because the Kayexelate wasn't making her "POOP" then there's no way her potassium should be getting lower. The lab MUST BE WRONG!!

LOL.

I called the nurse and apologized for her acting like a damn idiot. I am sooo sorry, she is crazy, I can't help it.

PS. I hope she doesn't read this forum, lmao, she will kick my a$$

"No, I'm afraid I can't tell you anything more about Daddy's bowel movement that he had at 1 a.m. as I wasn't here and all that was charted was that he had one. I'm sorry I have no further information." Darling daughter went all the way up to the VP of nursing to complain about this. What I wanted to say was, "Are you SERIOUS?" Your father isn't having any GI problems and this has nothing to do with why he's here. I think you are one sick cookie to block my way in the hall and ask was it runny? How many cups was it? What color was it? Did he grunt when he had it? Get a life!! It's people like you that give the whole human race a bad name."

LMAO. OK. Wow. I'm afraid of you now. I am starting a new thread asking for people to put me in their prayers that I never **** squeakykitty off. I dont think I'd survive it.

This is soo funny.:lol2::lol2::lol2:

I don't think one of those rude selfish jerks would want me as a roomate if they are in the hospital.

I speak some Spanish, and I have no problem speaking Spanish to Spanish speakers, but a few have refused to speak Spanish to me. They will talk to the translator, but not to me. One guy just said "No speaky" to me over and over, when I told him (in Spanish) that his wife had arrived. I've never understood that.

Its because you are a girl. It happened to me once......The wife apologized for her husband being a jerk. :icon_roll

To the family that won't leave their poor mother alone to rest and rotate in and out of her room hour after hour, all day long--

For God's sake, let your mother get some rest. The quality of the care I give will not be improved by you sitting there and GLARING at me all day. Yes, I do know what I'm doing. As a matter of fact, I KNOW HOW TO DO MY JOB BETTER THAN YOU KNOW HOW TO DO MY JOB. No, I'm not just going to let your mom die, unattended, without doing anything, because we are not of the same ethnicity. If you can do better, take her home. Otherwise, get out of my way and stop asking the same stupid questions over and over again. And pass that on to your brothers and sisters while you're at it.

...yes! Well put! I would also add; "Stop reading those Reader's Digest articles that state how awful hospital care is and you have to lie or demand to get things done right".

We have a guy on our unit right now, para, young guy, gang related shooting a few years ago. He has been with us for almost two months (in the hospital on our med surg floor because no one will take him). He is a young guy, still talking and acting like a gangster. This week he decided that he was going to start putting his hands all over the nurses and the CNA staff. Well, the staff got upset, they called psychiatry down to talk to the staff (this was on the day shift) to help them understand how to develop boundaries with him and how to deal with him when he said or did something sexual. When I got to work and found out about this I was laughing my A__ off. Guess What? I know how to fix this. Just go in there and tell him to stop this SH__!!! I told the staff that if he makes one move toward anyone to come get me and I will have a come to Jesus meeting with him. He went downstairs in his wheelchair and came back with a hicky. We don't know what was going on with that.

A coworker needed to cath a very obese female. The nurse pulled up the patient's belly and instructed the patient, "you're going to have to hold this until i can get the catheter in". She honestly didn't have enough hands to hold the patient's belly out of the way.

I had a lady one day that took 6 of us to cath her. Two on each leg, one to help pull the "middle" open and me, with a head lamp on, catheter in had, to get to the "spot". No soap or water had been in that area for a while, so it was quite an experience.
