Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.

Just curious as to what you would say. Mine goes something like this: Nurses Relations Video Nurse Life

Updated:

Hi, my name is AngelfireRN, I'll be your nurse tonight.

I am not a waitress, nor am I your slave.

Yelling and hurling obscenities at me will not get you your pain meds any sooner than they are ordered. Nor will having your family member or entourage do the same.

Threatening lawsuits and having umpteen family members camp out in the halls or hold up the nurse's station will not get you preferential treatment.

Physically grabbing me as I go down the hall is NOT a good idea.

I do not give the orders, but I do have to follow/enforce them. This is something that you should take up with your doctor.

No, I will not call him again to ask him for more pain medicine. He has been called twice and has said no both times.

No, I will not give you his number so you can "straighten him out".

No, you are not my only patient, and I highly doubt that you are single-handedly paying my salary. On the off chance that you are, let's talk about a raise.

NO, NO, NO, I most empahatically will NOT come get you when it is time for your next pain shot while you are having a smoke break. I also will not bring it to you in the smoking room. (Have actually said that, I am allergic to cigarettes. I did it once, had an asthma attack, desatted to 83, and turned blue, according to the patient and my charge nurse, after the patient had to help me back to the floor).

No, I don't really care if your family has not eaten all day, they drove here by themselves, they are not sick, and no, I will not call for 6 guest trays. (This of course, is if the patient in question does not need all 6 family members present, and is not at death's door).

No, you may not have 3 six-packs of soda from the kitchen, there are other people that would like a snack, too.

No, they will not open up the kitchen up just for you, at 1 in the morning, because you don't like the snacks we have on the floor.

I could think of hundreds, but those will do for a start. I know it sounds mean, but this is why I got out of bedside nursing. When a hospital becomes the Hilton, I'm gone!

Have fun!

Ahhh. The sarcasm of "seasoned" nurses! My personal favoritefrom beligerent and usually drunk patients (when I used to work ICU)..."You're trying to kill me!"....my response was always "You're not going to die on my shift. I don't want to do any more paperwork".

I love my job(s)...love my patients...but there are days I think I (we all) could choke them! :grn:

You know, most of our problems seem more related to family members rather than the patient. I had a girl the other day sleeping in the bed with her boyfriend who had MRSA. But you know, why get upset about it. She probably has it already. I have been threatened by family members and visitors. I have had people threaten to wait for me outside after my shift. That is why I carry a weapon. I cary a .38 and I have a carry permit. It is ALWAYS in the pocket of my jacket with my hand on the trigger every night when I walk to my car. I don't trust anybody. I have had people follow me home and I have had family members threaten to shoot me. When I worked in a large county, inner city hospital in Houston in the ED I had these kinds of problems all the time. I live outside Seattle now but there are nuts everywhere. This is a small community and very safe, but after my experience in Houston in the ED for all those years, I just can't seem to get the feeling of being safe anymore.

It is sad that you need to be fearful like that

I always want to respond - "I'm medically trained - I know how to kill you, so if I was really trying, you'd already be dead! Don't tempt me!"

There's quite a difference between infection, and no recent acquaintance with soap and water.

BV smells bad, and post-workout sweat isn't pleasant, but there's something about plain old chronically-unwashed body odor that literally turns my stomach.

i gag when someone is close by home/work/out in public and i can smell weeks of stale BO/dirt from someone who hasn't washed body or clothing. with a pt i hold nose and get them bathed asap have had pt refuse unfortuenaly

I would absolutely LOVE to tell someone "I am medically trained and I know how to kill you". What a total breath of fresh air that would be.

This thread has made me think for next time I am a patient. I always saw it as I didnt have an oportunity to shower while in the hospital due to having an IV in, though I have since realized that probably if I asked the nurse has ways to make it doable.

I remember this guy who came into the ED by EMS for chest pain. We placed him in the cardiac room which was large enough to hold two patients so it was a big room. The staff could absolutely not go in the room with this guy, he smelled soooo bad. I don't know how EMS personnel were able to stay in an ambulance with him. In any case, the doctor was yelling at this guy from the door " Sir! Sir!, How long has it been since you had a bath?" and the guy says " I don't know. Did it rain today?". We finally got three people (myself included) and took him into a big room we had with a drain in the floor and scrubbed him head to toe. It took us forever. He was feeling great after his bath. No more chest pain.

There is a technician to whom we would all love to say that, but we dare not because when people have, they lived to regret it. For reasons I won't go into here, she is exempt from disciplinary action.

She's so bad today, if I wasn't scheduled to go to another building in an hour or so, I would have gone home "sick".

During report last night, an a&ox3 patient parked his wheelchair just in front of the nurse's desk because he was looking for some one to put him to bed.

Me: Can I help you?

Pt: Yeah I'm looking to get some help in going to bed.

Me: Ok, I will call your nurses aide. (Picks up the phone, speaks to his aide, she says she is on her way down).

Pt: (still sitting there..)

Me: Ok, one of the nurse's aides is on her way down to help you. Why don't you meet her in your room.

Pt: Well can't I sit out here and join civilization for a while?

Me: Unfortunately I am in the middle of giving a confidential patient report to the night nurse, so I can't have you sitting at the desk just now.

Pt: Well I don't have my glasses on.

Me: *headdesk*

What I wanted to say--oh really, you can't hear without your glasses on?
