Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.

Just curious as to what you would say. Mine goes something like this: Nurses Relations Video Nurse Life

Updated:

Hi, my name is AngelfireRN, I'll be your nurse tonight.

I am not a waitress, nor am I your slave.

Yelling and hurling obscenities at me will not get you your pain meds any sooner than they are ordered. Nor will having your family member or entourage do the same.

Threatening lawsuits and having umpteen family members camp out in the halls or hold up the nurse's station will not get you preferential treatment.

Physically grabbing me as I go down the hall is NOT a good idea.

I do not give the orders, but I do have to follow/enforce them. This is something that you should take up with your doctor.

No, I will not call him again to ask him for more pain medicine. He has been called twice and has said no both times.

No, I will not give you his number so you can "straighten him out".

No, you are not my only patient, and I highly doubt that you are single-handedly paying my salary. On the off chance that you are, let's talk about a raise.

NO, NO, NO, I most empahatically will NOT come get you when it is time for your next pain shot while you are having a smoke break. I also will not bring it to you in the smoking room. (Have actually said that, I am allergic to cigarettes. I did it once, had an asthma attack, desatted to 83, and turned blue, according to the patient and my charge nurse, after the patient had to help me back to the floor).

No, I don't really care if your family has not eaten all day, they drove here by themselves, they are not sick, and no, I will not call for 6 guest trays. (This of course, is if the patient in question does not need all 6 family members present, and is not at death's door).

No, you may not have 3 six-packs of soda from the kitchen, there are other people that would like a snack, too.

No, they will not open up the kitchen up just for you, at 1 in the morning, because you don't like the snacks we have on the floor.

I could think of hundreds, but those will do for a start. I know it sounds mean, but this is why I got out of bedside nursing. When a hospital becomes the Hilton, I'm gone!

Have fun!

No, I won't pierce your naval or anyone elses. I don't do cosmetic surgery. I don't even do people. I don't care that your friend bought her needle from the vet's office down the street and did it herself.

I completely understand that one. Had a pt whose wife stayed with him THE WHOLE time. I work on a step down telemetry unit and this lady brought framed pictures, two lap tops with cords,(I tripped over one while trying to do bed side care) a ton of magazines that she laid across the heater, (Jacho loved that one) then she complained when the techs came into the room to do a sugar test. Unbelievable. My recent comment about obese people was not meant to offend anyone, and I never show that attitude towards any patients regardless of how nasty they may be towards me. I just don't understand what happened to old fashion responability? I mean come on, a patient comes in who has awful drug withdrawls and starts screaming and yelling your telling me that doesn't bother you? Better yet he pulls his IV out and pees all over the place. He/she has a serious drug problem and it's put them in the hospital because it's compromised their health. To me, it's the same concept as servere obesity. How is consuming too much food any different than abusing your body with drugs?:o

Not exactly the same, but get this...we had an elderly man as an inpatient who normally cared for his wife at home... well obviously that's not possible seeing as he's at the hospital... so the MD said it would be okay for the family to dump her on us... she "stayed with him for the night..." She needed assist to toilet & wore briefs... I was beyond belief... SHE was MORE work than her husband the patient... plus she disturbed him to the point he kept trying to get OOB, when he was on bedrest... the kicker the family left her meds & asked that we give them to her!!:banghead: Most certainly will NOT!!

Where the heck is that place! I have had families attempt to do this and NOT ONE place I have ever worked at enforced it. And I don't have anything nice to say about hospitals any more. But I can say that no matter where I worked there was a LIABILITY involved in this.

That needs to be written up. I highly doubt risk management is going to like that one bit. Write it up so that doctor gets corrected. Wrong Wrong Wrong. Not supposed to happen.

That is what I can't stomach any more. We are registered nurses not "jack of all trade superhumans who do not have no in their vocabulary and do whatever we are asked whenever we are asked even if it is wrong."

We have NO limits to what we have to do. No lifting limits. Can't protect ourselves in any way.

Just had a patient a few weeks ago come up from the ER and they had not told her to remove her multiple body piercings.(both nipples, navel and 2 in the hoo hoo) The surgeon wanted them out, because they can cause problems with the electrocautery. We didn't know she had them until the jonny was coming off and I was putting the foley in(she lied when asked about jewelry). Most of the people in the room at that point were older and had no clue how to remove them...I had piercings in the past(although, NOT in my hoo hoo LOL) so now I'm known as the "piercing removal specialist"

I'm quite sure she was irate when she woke up and realized her piercings were out but that's what happens when you lie to your caregivers...

Also, I would ask of patients that they TAKE A BATH and more specifically, clean out their nooks and crannies if possible. You don't even want to know what I've found in there! One fellow nurse claimed that the OR team found a half eaten sandwich under the breast of a morbidly obese patient.

Had a college professor that was doing clinicals in ER, and found a remote control between a ladies fat rolls (I'm not sure of any better term, sorry). Her husband said "great, I've looked everywhere for that thing". The sad part is, she was developing a ulcer where the remote was residing. :(

We found what looked like cream cheese in the skin folds of a patients abdomen, couldn't see it till we laid her flat. It took quite a bit of cleaning to get it out.

Also patients that have large black plugs in their belly button :uhoh3: still, a bit of KY jelly and a finger usually gets that out OK.

Once looked after a coal miner, he had so much dirt ingrained into the skin of his back. Took us bath after bath to get him clean.

Hello SubPrime crisis...(I know that not everyone who is affected was irresponsible, but I'm sure that many were...)

I know that some of the posts seem mean, but to me it reflects frustration at the level of irresponsibility of certain individuals...I wish people would take more responsibility for their health, exercise and eat healthy...MacDonald's is not responsible for a person who walks in of their own will, pays with their own money and eats food that will cause that individual harm...

I'm not a nurse yet, but things I'd love to say to people I know:

You have been diagnosed with Bipolar disorder...please, please, PLEASE take your medication...

You have difficulty walking up stairs and basic ADL's due to your weight, please stop eating fried foods and ice cream by the bucketful...and please find counselling for emotional eating...

You are tired all the time...please go see a family doctor...it's been 30 years since a check up...

You are 29...your daddy is not responsible for paying for your pedicures...

I will definitely make sure that my autistic son does not come to your clinic. he often hits and bites doctors who invade his space and touch him without appropriate warning especially if he is sick. he is 3.5 and medicated for his aggression. at this point he does not understand discipline. looking at him he appears normal so you would make such judgment that he is just unruly, but remember you cant judge a book by its cover. I can remember the days I judged people based on their kids behavior, but boy oh boy do I have a different attitude now. I hope you dont have to go through what I did to get that change of heart.

I am sorry for your experience, but this IS a vent thread. Please don't misconstrue it as a personal attack. If you explain your child's condition, no one will think ill of him, I am sure. I know I wouldn't.

Hello SubPrime crisis...(I know that not everyone who is affected was irresponsible, but I'm sure that many were...)

I saw an interview on CNN with such a family. It was a husband and wife, no kids, who did in-home day care - that was all they did - and were going to lose their $400,000 McMansion. When I heard about the day care, I thought at first that maybe they owned a chain, but no, that was their sole source of income. When they were interviewed, it was obvious that both were mildly mentally retarded.

How do the slime who exploit people like this get through the day?

I know people who are very irresponsible with their money, and I have learned the hard way that telling people that their financial problems are their own fault usually goes over about as well as telling them that the problems they're having with their children are their own fault. As Twinkerrs knows, that isn't always the case, but usually it is.

My before-taxes income has slipped over the 6-figure mark and I drive an 8-year-old car with 100,000 miles on it. Some people ask me why, and I just tell them it's none of their business, but the fact is, it still runs so why should I replace it? Granted, I spent 2 hours in the shop this morning and have to come back, but hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix or replace it. JMHO.

Twinkerrs, most people can tell the difference between an undisciplined child and a child who really does have issues. You can usually tell by the way the parents react. If they don't think the behavior is funny or cute, it's the child's wiring. JMHO.
