Things I have learned in Nursing

Published

(Or life)This is sort of like dropping words of wisdom of things you have learned during the course of nursing. Heck it may even be another profession. But just things you've learned that could be of help to another.

I have learned to always have agreements written down in black and white. If you don't have it written down, then you cannot claim it.

Specializes in NICU.
Calmly asking a patient who is anxious, painful, etc to 'breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth' will often work (except if theyre HOH lol) as I learned in labor prep classes 17 years ago. To get a chuckle out of the men I'll say it's just like having a baby!

I work on a respiratory floor. So we see tons of COPDers... We all tell them... Smell the flowers.... blow out the birthday candles... If you sit down with them and do it with them, you'll be amazed at the results!!!

Specializes in OB/GYN, Peds, School Nurse, DD.

Nursing has taught me you can't fix everything. No matter how diligent, how competent, and how courageous you are, sometimes things are going to go south. You can't take it personally, because someone else always needs you.

It's so true!!

1. Patients lie.

2. Don't trust the family.

Specializes in LTC.

I have learned that there's the real world and there is "STATE'S HERE"

Specializes in Trauma, Teaching.

The hospital will not close down, there will not be massive deaths of patients and Armagedden shall not commence just because I call in sick when I feel lousy and of no use to anyone. I will not feel guilty about it ever again.

Specializes in geriatrics.

Nursing has taught me to be thankful for my two eyes, two arms, and two legs that work. And a brain that still functions well (most of the time). Very important, and yet we take our parts for granted :)

Specializes in Oncology/Hematology, Infusion, clinical.

The less you expect from people, the more likely you are to be pleased with them.
