They posted my fall book list.

For 2 classes, A&P I and Foundations of Nursing it's $1300 for the semester.

After I passed out [lol] I was thinking...is that average? I have to request more loan money now.

That's about what my books ended up costing the first semester. Subsequent semesters, however, were much more reasonable...usually only had to get one or maybe two additional texts, so it doesn't hurt the pocketbook as much! Good luck to you in your journey...I graduated in May, but it seems like only yesterday that I was passing out over my book costs too!!

Best website for textbooks **EVER**:

www.bigwords.com

You put in all your ISBN book numbers and it tells you where to go on the web to get them the cheapest, it even figures in shipping, promotions, sales prices, and tax! You gotta try it! I'm in love with the bigwords Uberbot! :1luvu:

I had 14 books on my list for Intro to Nursing, 1 course=14 books.

I have 18 "required books" and 22 "recommended books" it's crazy. I spoke to some 2nd yr students and they said that they didn't even crack most of their books until after Fundamentals. I'm not really sure what to think but the book list would cost me $1300!! Thank god for eBay, Half.com and Amazon!

Oh & I must be misunderstanding something about the A&P books. My A&P books cost me $130+32+65 and that was the coloring book, the textbook and the lab manual. For I and II.

AND then i sold them all on eBay for about $50 more than the bookstore would have given me for buy back.

School bookstores ought to be fined for racketeering of some sort. It should be a criminal act for how much they charge for books. You can buy the exact same book off of the Publisher's website for less than the college bookstore.

Thanks everyone!

I think I'm going to go to the bookstore and get the ISBN numbers and order some online. The A&P class has 3 books, nursing has 20. I know a lot of them I'll take with me through the following semesters so that makes me feel better.

I'm in a 2 year program and my semester's tuition is cheaper than the books.

You can go to a place called http://www.campusbooks.com/. You put in your ISBN # and they look up the price of your books at several online bookstores like amazon, ebay etc. Its a great way to compare prices... Its saved me about 50% from our bookstore's price. Good Luck!!

1st semester was by far the most expensive; with all the uniforms, med. dictionary, drug book, careplan book. for the course books alone though, it came to about $500. $1300 does sound a little pricey, especially for just books, but what can you do, they know we need them. i was so blessed to have this county program where i live. after i qualified they paid for everything, i couldn't believe it. maybe your state has similar programs.

$1300 sounds about right for the 1st semester. like others have said... each subsequent semester should require fewer textbooks.

I just purchased my 8 required textbooks (and 5 more other students recommended for the 1st semester) and the total cost was about $1150.

So i should expect to pay 1,000+ for book for the first semester

I start nursing school this fall. I was referred to www.campusi.com by a friend. You enter the ISBN number and it will pull up all of the websites that sell that particular book from cheapest on up. I bought an $80.00 book for $25.00. I plan on checking out some of these others mentioned as well.

Talk to someone in the class before you and find out which books you really NEED to have at home. Probably the fundamentals text for sure. Dictionary and Drug Guide also essential. Others you may get a chapter or two of assigned reading. DOn't buy them. Check your library to see if they are on reserve. Check your public library and see if they are there (they can search other libraries too!). And if it doesnt' make you feel guilty, go to Barnes and Noble, buy a cup of coffee, sit in a comfy chair and read that ONE chapter assigned in that $100 book. The others. you dont' always need the current edition. I got along fine with one edition back for Micro, A & P and Bio. I could have done without the brand new $200 maternity book and just read an older version. THen with the ones you HAVE to buy -- www.allbookstores.com

Good luck!

Oh, I also bought a PDA and software from www.skyscape.com that eliminated the need for the drug guide, lab guide, dictionary and a few other nifty items I got for free. They cost as much as the books, but you always have them in your pocket -- not in a rolling backpack. You also get free updates for a year.
