Well, that's just effing great! You mean after we take the stinking all-or-nothing dosage calculation test, we can still be booted for math at any time?!?!? That's really sad for your classmates. I'm sure you're breathing a sigh of relief right about now since you passed it. I'm pretty good in math, but I HATE pop quizzes.
It especially stinks because of the "we'll take you back IF there is a spot". I know around here, none of the programs will have a spot. Too competitive, and if you get dropped for whatever reason, it's as good as being sent to the back of the line.
I can see the schools point about having to pass with a 90%, but kick them out because of it? What about tutoring and summer classes and the like? It does seem harsh. Maybe not if they failed by a huge margin, but geez, if it's only 10 or 15 points, it seems a shame.
We don't have pop quizzes on math, but med math calc had to be 100% to stay in the program. The rationale is med math must be correct 100% of the time for patient safety.
I actually think a pop quiz is a good idea, but a re-take would be nice, rather than summarily washing someone from the program.
Take care.
We have had a few people dropped from our program for the same reason, though our "quizzes" have to be passed with 100%. I cant say i didnt sweat it too, but I understand why they do this. Think about it this way...when you get out of school, the doctor isnt going to tell you "ok, nurse, two weeks from now, youll have to figure out an IV drip rate, so you should probably study up on it". I know its silly to think about it that way, but math is SOOO important in our chosen profession. We did shed tears for those that had to leave...even the teacher that graded some of the quizzes cried with us. Thats a LOT of money and time lost over a silly math quiz, but it would be infinitely worse if instead of failing that quiz, they miscalculated and killed a patient.

I'm just getting the bad news from some of my friends who found out on late on Friday that they're being withdrawn from the program. The nursing dept dropped a surprise math exam on all of us at the end of the last lecture, and they didn't pass. They have this rule that math competency quizzes can be given at any time, and you're only allowed to get 10% of the questions wrong, otherwise you have to withdraw from the program and take remedial courses in safety and prevention of medication errors. I feel soooo bad for these guys because I know how hard they've worked to get this far. And even after they get through the remedial stuff, they have to wait until next next spring (if there's space available) before they can apply to continue in the program. Now, that just sucks, doesn't it!!!
