They Called Out WHY??????

Published

the thread about the nurse calling out because of herpes made me think about some of the reasons people i've worked with have called out sick. some ridiculous, some shocking, some understandable . . .

so what's the strangest, funniest or most bizarre reason someone you know of has called out?

there was my friend who for some reason thought trying a totally new hairdo before work on a monday morning was a reasonable thing to do. she got her hair done, hated it, and to my amazement called in sick and gave the real reason! she called in sick for a bad hair day!

or the male nurse who called in sick because he'd been out drinking the night before, went home with a woman he'd just met and couldn't find his car. he actually called in and said he wouldn't be to work because he couldn't find his car. (i think i would have mentioned nausea or a headache!)

and then there was the man who called in sick because (and i quote) "i can't come in to work, i just can't! i so ashamed of myself, i'm such a ****! i just slept with my best friend's husband!" the woman who thought she was his best friend happened to be working that night!

i called in sick once because i'd just caught my then-husband in bed with the next door neighbor. (i said i had the flu!)

I've cut class for Obama a couple of times. The first time was to attend a small event for supporters where I met him in the hallway and he signed my book. The second time was when he won the nomination, so I could watch all day election coverage on MSNBC. In November I will be cutting class/calling in sick on election day, too.

Usually when I call in, though, it is because of "female problems." Unfortunately it is not uncommon for me to call in 2 days a month because I can't stand for more than a minute without getting dizzy and nausiated. It has been really problematic with some of my employers :(.

I very very rarely call in sick unless I'm febrile or vomiting. However, there have been a couple instances where I called in with eye problems. I just couldn't see working that day. :saint:

wild, i never once thought about that, but once this was in a place where everytime you scheduled a vacation they would come up with some excuse to cancel just after you had made all the plans

anyway for about a week i happen to mention that my uncle in alabama was extremely sick, called them on the day i left and told them poor old uncle ralph had died and i needed several days off and i would call them when i got back

God don't like for you to lie, i got the worst sunburn of my life and i had to got back to work looking like a lobster

Years ago I called out to the off-shift supervisor when I found my basement full of smoke/fire (true). I was told "No way, its too late to call out now, I can't replace you this late". I started crying and mumbling "but the firemen are here, my kid and dog are in the car, the house has been condemned, etc". the supervisors response..........."OK, you can come in late, but no later than eleven" :banghead:

BTW, I had not called out in the two years prior! I did not go to work and they forgave me.

There is NO job like nursing!

I think probably the stupidest reason I called out was when I stabbed myself in the arm (accidentally) and couldn't move my fingers for a couple days afterward. I felt really really dumb after that one.

I'll bet noone has ever had to use this one. I had to call off work because I was locked in my apartment. Yes, not a typo.. I was really locked IN my apartment. I had to let the maintainence guy crawl in through the hole for the airconditioner. I tell you those things are heavy. They had to remove the whole door knob assembly from inside. It took forever.

I had a fellow firefighter call in sick to work with Bell's Palsy. He was fine the next shift. I think he browsed through the Merck Manual looking for an interesting excuse. He always came up with imaginative ones!

When I was with the FD, I called in for being too b****y. I had quit smoking and I was absolutely a raving, angry wreck. My Captain understood and thanked me for not coming into work in such a condition. It didn't last too long.

Ohio...my friend did that once too. Well similar anyway. She lived in an apartment that was the upstairs of a home. She left and locked the door at the top of the steps and closed it. Got to the bottom of the steps where there was a deadbolt that you needed the key to get out and realized she didn't have her key. I kept calling her from our office saying you are going to be fired if you don't call soon!! At lunch I went to her place and there she was...locked in a stairway! I had to call a locksmith to get her out!

Funny thing is, this was the SECOND time she did it. First time was on Christmas Eve and she had to wait until her landlord came home from midnight mass to let her out! (she was Jewish and so nobody was really expecting her)

I needed this laugh...

three times! there are perks to being an active campaign volunteer. the one i mentioned i just happened to run into him in the hall coming from the gym and shook his hand and talked to him for about 2 seconds.

at a later event the campaign selected me to be a greater. there were ten of us who gathered in a hallway and as he walked through he stopped to talk to each of us for about 2 minutes. when they told us about it i thought it was some kind of photo-op and wondered why they didn't pick someone more attractive than me, lol. there were no cameras, though, so i guess it was just a nice gesture from the campaign.

i got to meet him again briefly at the end of the event when they gathered all of the event volunteers for pictures. he's a very, very nice person. :loveya:

i also met michelle at a separate event. i think she's even more awesome than he is.:yeah:

I've got a real doozy and it's true too. I had to call in once because a great big semi truck parked in front of my driveway! :chuckle Well of course my car was in the garage and we just couldn't get out. I was mad too!
