They called the cops!

You are home from work today and you and your SO are having a lovely, relaxing time together when suddenly, the doorbell rings. You go to the door. A policeman is there. You open the door and he informs you that your co-workers called him to check on you because you were a no-call, no-show for your shift today!

It is exactly 1 ½ hours into your shift. You check and sure enough, there are messages on your phone from work. You apparently did not get the latest version of schedule changes.

How would you feel?

I'd have been embarrassed, to be sure, but would also be glad that they were proactive.

I was at a place where we had a no-show by somebody who was very dependable. She had died suddenly. I never knew whether she could've been saved if somebody had found her sooner but it did reinforce my belief of "better safe than sorry."

to bagladyrn..

definitely laughing about the imagination of your supervisor! thanx for the laugh (even tho it was at your expense)!

My facility would keep the cops busy if we did that with the no call/no shows!! WOW! What an over reaction.

Hi,

We called for a well-being check on one of our Day-shift Nurses who did not show up; she was always there about 30 min. early. Well, of course, we waited a couple of hours & then called. She had been off for 2 days prior to this day.

The Police went over to her apartment. They found her dead. She had committed suicide --they estimated--on the first day she had been off. She was a wonderful, thoughtful young woman--no one would have ever thought she would have done this. We were all quite broken up about this.

We were so saddened that she hadn't felt comfortable enough with any of us that she could have talked & shared with us.

This happened several years ago, & I still remember it as if it was just yesterday. That's why I still get a bit freaked when people don't show up when they normally do.

God, that's just awful :( It makes us realize just how much people have going on in their thoughts while maintaining a seemingly "okay" life.

I would be extremely grateful. A friend of the family never missed work. She was never late or even called in sick. One day she didn't show up. Her boss called her house to see if she was home but she didn't answer. After a little while, she called the police to check on her.

It's a long story... but the police finally decided to peek in the window (there was fresh snow on the driveway and tire tracks which led the police to believe they were gone.... but it was a carpool who pulled up and honked then left when no one came out...)

Anyway, the entire family was lying on the floor passed out from carbon monoxide poisoning. They rushed the family to the hospital... and they did survive, thanks to that pesky boss.

I just always remember that story as my previous work track record isn't the greatest...I can't imagine anyone would do that for me...

It would be a little startling, but I guess your coworkers really care about you, I know mine wouldn't go to that extreme...that or maybe they were worried your SO sent you swimming with the fishes... JUST KIDDING !!!!!!

I know how you feel! I had a similar thing happen to me except the cops didn't come to my door. Our Hospice on call schedule got changed a few weeks before and the change wasn't relayed to the hospital operator. I came home one Sunday evening to find 5 messages on my answering machine from the hospital operator, the on call supervisor, and my nurse manager. They were going to call the police to check on me because I was on call(I wasn't) and they hadn't heard from me when I was paged. They never even checked the on call schedule to see if they had the right person!:angryfire

Personally, I would feel honored that my co-workers thought enough of me to make sure everything was alright. You never know when something dreadful could happen and it could happen in an instant.

Sounds like you mean alot to them and in my book that says alot about the person you are!

I would feel weird, but it does depend on the situ. if you are someone who doesnt call in, are on time and all that jazz, maybe they really thought something was up.

If you go the other way, which is none of my business, maybe your work was trying to be idiots and try and do some sort of "show of power". dunno..weird either way!

GL!

Years ago , I worked at the community hospital in our town, mostly nights. Once I clocked in , went to report , and heard the fascinating story of a co-worker having called in , yet again. The DON was unable to find a replacement at home , so, learning that one nurse was out on a date , found out the date' s name from the nurse's mother , and actually got the police in our small town to find the guy's car at the restaurant , go in and tell the nurse that she was needed at work. STILL takes the cake.
