The Spring '05 Anatomy & Physiology Club: A&P 2

Man, a girl doesn't look at the boards for a few days to (ahem) study and look at all these awesome scores!!! Well, I must add mine to the list.
This is the test I was crying about last week with my first post over the cardiovascular, endocrine and blood....when the smoke cleared...I got a 90. I am not complaining...the scores ranged from 99-47....so! Funny thing is, I got the 1 point I needed for the 90 because in the written directions she told us to draw a heart above our name for 1 bonus point....Thank goodness I am funny about reading and rereading directions!! :)
Anyway - that one is over and our practical is coming up in two weeks - all the above plus the digestive system which we are now covering in lecture.
Congratulations all around - keep up the hard/great work!!

I LOVE prof's when profs put little extra points in like that. I always check for them too.... none so far.... well actually we got some points in Microbio for knowing NOT to rinse live microbes down the sink. LOLOL Someone actually MISSED that one!! duh...:uhoh21:

Great job on the grades everyone!! Woohoo!!

I found out yesterday that our prof is HORRIBLE about grading exams! We'll be lucky if we get our grades before our NEXT exam, on 2/28 - next Monday. UGH!! So I'll be waiting and NOT holding my breath. LOL

I did get my quiz grades from lab - we have a quiz every week. So far, in 4 weeks including yesterday, I've gotten:

110%

80%

110% (yesterdays)

Our lowest quiz grade is thrown out, so hopefully that will be the 80%. We get the 10 extra points for getting the bonus questions. Our lowest exam grade is thrown out also, and I keep thinking it may be the one I had Monday.

Back to studying. We're doing the heart and circulation. I'm really enjoying this - I detested the endocrine chapters!

I finally shed of the evil endocrine and reproductive systems. We had our lab practical tonight on those 2 sys. and I got a 100 plus 9 bonus pts. !! I was so happy b/c I wasn't happy with my last lecture grade. My teachers lecture tests are VERY difficult but tonights practical wasn't so bad. Congrats on all the good grades and it's on to the respiratory sys. for me.

:balloons: Well done! I think this board is great for encouraging each other. Especially when most of your fellow students want to see you do poorly because of competition or you have family that just doesn't understand. Keep up the good work everyone!

I was debating if I would discuss my issue on the forum. Everyone has gotten such good grades. I didn't do so well on my first lecture exam :crying2: . The lab exam I did get 23.5/25 that wasn't too bad. But I was thrown off with the lecture. We are now studying the nervous system and I have started taping the lectures and typing them out after class. It is easier to understand when I type the notes and look them over. I couldn't read my notes in my notebook. Sometimes I get sleepy in class and I can't read my writing. It has been working out okay for now.

I am hoping if I just read over the notes that I typed that will help me to understand the mtierial. Does anyone have any tips on studying this stuff?

You are definitely on the right track with taping the lectures and retyping the notes. I retype my notes as soon as I can, and that helps me a lot.

While I am taking notes, I make stars next to the topics that my Prof says will be on the exam.... or anything that I am sure will be there.

Make yourself test banks.... by creating questions from your notes. The process of creating the test bank questions themselves is a great learning tool. Once I create my test, I take the whole thing as if it were a real test. Any questions that I do not know the answer to immediately I star (*). Then I work about 10 questions at a time, sometimes rewriting the test, until I know every answer right away.

This is what works with me, it may or may not help you, but hey it's worth a try.

We all have days when we just don't do well on a test. The important thing is you are doing something to change your results which is a great thing.

Don't feel badly about your first exam!! I hesitate posting about mine, because I have, in all honesty, never received lower than a grade of 89 on ANY test in college. EVER.

I got a 69.

I'm furious with myself. I went into it KNOWING I didn't study the right or most important stuff. Everyone told me that this prof's exams were "easy-peasy". Yeah! I was also told that nursing exams were WAY harder. NO WAY! I never received less than a 93 on any nursing exam. From the first question of this one on endo and blood, I knew I was in trouble. I didn't recognize that 5 WORDS on this exam, so I knew I hadn't studied right.

I'm not making the mistake again. I study for our quizzes each week in lab, and so far I've gotten 3 110%'s and 1 80%), but I AM studying for our next exam in lecture (next Thursday) starting now! No waiting. I'm going to review each day and night, even the day's I don't have class.

Luckily our lowest grade gets dropped, from lecture, and from lab. I'm making that 69% my WAYYYYYY lowest one! LOL

Two women in my lecture tape the class. I have a voice recorder on my PDA, but haven't used it much. It only tapes well if it is right near the person speaking.

They like it, but I don't know that I'd have the patience to go back and transcribe the notes. Maybe I would if I was used to it as part of my "study regime" though. Many people swear by it.

What works for me is:

*Making flashcards of material and bringing them everywhere. I look at them in the carpool lane to pick up my kids, whenever I have a wait, during commercials of my shows (though not so much anymore since we recently got DVR - awesome invention ), etc. Have your kids/spouse/friend quiz you with them.

*When I highlight in class, I am very selective. I see some people making rainbows in their notes, and nothing stands out, not to mention it hurts my eyes. It took some practice but now I have a pretty good highlighting system down. I still use a couple different colors but only 10-25% of the page gets highlighted.

*Don't bother highlighting or studying things you already know. I used to do this until I heard this simple but sensible tip in the College 101 course. It was a DUH moment. It really saves time and mental capacity LOL Now I'm not talking about not studying material after you think you know it. But there are certain things in this course that I knew coming in - that's what I'm talking about.

*Try to scan/read the material before class. I don't always get to do this, but it really helps when I do.

*Does your school have free tutoring? If so, take advantage of it! I have used it for my online algebra class and it's really helped.

*My lab instructor has open lab periods where we can go in the lab to go over things more. She also has study sessions which I've heard are very beneficial.
