Hi guys

just returned from a mounths vacation in the USA and we really enjoyed it. We are now ready to start the process of relocating. We have already hit are first hurdle, the kids. IF anyone has relocated with children between the ages of 11 and 13 or perhaps older what was there reaction when you announced it to them. Please let us know and how did things progress.

He will stay at school until he is 18 years. The US kids start full time education 2 years after our children in the UK so they leave later. The school will send for transcripts so that they will know what your son will need to study over here. American History will be one subject that he will need to take.

Get him to play and play football or soccer as it is said overhere, because if he is talented the schools will actively promote his skill.

Thanks Madwife,

I feel much happier that he can stop in school untill he is 18yrs old. It will also help him to settle in faster and make friends. He feels right now that were going to ruin his life. I know that its normal for him to think this way but keeping him informed will help the transition. He's a bright boy.

Football is one of his greatest loves, he keeps saying no one plays football in America, I shall give him the great news regading this fact right away.

Thanks again

The schools all encourage their kids to play soccer and there are lots of teams about, my son was surprised by the high standard.

Good luck to y'all

I think many children start playing soccer around the age of 5 or 6, but then drop out around middle school/junior high age, when it means enrolling in AYSO teams, and not just playing locally. At least around here. At that age, the kids have so much else to do, and if you don't play really well, you won't get the playing time on the field.

I'm surprised that professional soccer isn't popular here, considering the number of boys and girls involved as children.

Hi,

How did you go about finding schools? I am only just starting the process now and my children are 6 and 5. I feel slightly reassured as general consenus seems to be the younger the better. I have searched the web trying to find out what the term times are. Are you coinciding your trip out with the start of a new academic year??

Any advice would be much appreciated.

P.s got fingerprints done today - £20!!!!

Should have just got arrested and got them done for free!! Although I don't think that would go down to well in USA somehow...

There are schools everywhere near your house, they have education authorities which are called District something or other I will find out. You just go into the reception with your documents and enroll them, not difficult.

You will find that your kids will be a little more advanced as the kids here dont start school until they are 5yrs old and full time school is at 6yrs old. You can spend a lot of your time in the classroom with your child if you want. You can join them for lunch too, some of the kids in my dd's class their parents bring them in McDonalds.

MacDonalds!!!!!

Thanks for the info tho'.

I did happen to go on a primary school web site before and it had a school menu - I must admit I was pretty schocked to see either hotdogs and chips, popcorn chicken and chips, pizza, ?corn dogs (?). I'm always trying to force feed them green veg and there wasn't any veg in sight - let alone green!!

Is this the norm? While we're not vegetarian and I really don't mind a bit of junk food now and again as a treat, but that's what it is - junk food!!

Hmmm. Does sound nice tho' being able to meet up for lunch.

Thanks again

AYSO mandates all children should play at least 3 quaters of the game, however AYSO is really not very challenging to most kids who have played before especially how the game is played in the UK. However there are many club teams which are a bigger committment but seem to hold onto the kids well into high school and some of the English premiership clubs have academies here, Charlton Athletic have a big one here in Arizona.

We had nothing like that when my boys were growing up in Oregon. After they grew out of the Boys Club program, they did not get involved in the middle school/high school teams. I never heard of any academies, either. The school district did run basketball camp in the summer, and of course the football programs was very important.

Hi, this is my first post. I am planning to be moving to Tucson to work at TMC sometime ! who knows when. (I-140 filed july 06, not approved yet).

I have a 15 yr old daughter who is not too keen on the move but resigned to it now and says she will get used to it, she was 8 when this all started!! and liked the idea then, got less enthusiastic with age.lol

It is relocating the kid that is worrying me the most out of the whole process I have to admit.

Anyone with teenagers who have made the move would like to know your experiences good or bad.

Hi there, reading your post with interest I also have kids who don't particularly want to move. (The oldest at 10 tells me she is going to move in with her gran!!) We went on holiday to the states recently, looked at houses etc. even the oldest was picking her new room! The kids also liked the pools (community park had waterslides and stuff) it swayed her a little towards moving, but it is a worry, I suppose you can only do your best to prepare them, daughter getting laptop for xmas...can use MSN in the states:icon_biggrin:
