The HRSA nursing scholarship is available now. I just submitted my application although I'm probably a long shot.

HRSA offer scholarships to help pay for health professions' education.
All Scholarship awardees will provide a one-year service commitment for each year of scholarship support received.
The application cycle typically opens in late Winter or early Spring and closes in late Spring or early Summer, so be sure to check the website regularly for updates.
To be eligible for the HRSA Scholarship, you must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited program that leads to a degree in one of the following disciplines:
You must also be a U.S. citizen, a national, or permanent resident.
Have no federal judgment liens and service commitment.
If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for scholarship through the HRSA's online application system.

joe n635dc,sorry to hear you didn't get the award!i know it's hard sometimes, but i always try to look at the brightside of things. i think everyone on this board knows how difficult it is for new nurses to get any kind of job right now, let alone a full time job. people post on here that it takes 9 months to even get an interview. hospitals in many areas are in hiring freezes. it will hopefully get better soon, but it may get way worse before it gets better. that being said, hrsa is great to pay for 500 people to go to school, but at the same time they are pumping out 500 new nurses with a proce tag over there heads. 2 years of full time service and if you can't get a job in the alotted timeframe you have to start paying all that money back. it is more money then it would be with loans plus you have only 3 years to pay instead of the longer time you have for loans. since you didnt get the award look at it like you can take your time to get the job you want, or maybe the only one thats available when the time comes, be it part time or home care or in a private hospital. then once you get a job you love and works for you, you can then apply for the loan repayment program they offer. i don't know if this helps you at all, but i hope it does! good luck in anything you do!
1) not everyone is graduating next year
2) even those that are would have graduated whether or not they received the scholarship. so this does not change the number of graduating nursing students.
hospitals are not the only sites that are approved so even if you have to work in a nursing home etc. for 2 years, hey you'll be getting paid and you just might like it. i always thought i'd hate psych, but i did my extern hours there and absolutely loved it. it is the area that i would like to go into after getting some med/ surg. experience, but hey i may change my mind along the way. the reason why a lot of people (that i know) take a long time to find jobs i find is that they limit themselves to certain areas, facilities, etc. in all actuality as a new grad you don't get your pick for the most part regardless, and if you will only work in a certain place then you will probably have to wait. hopefully everyone does get a job upon graduation scholarship or no scholarship.
Hello everyone,
I am honored and blessed to have been awarded this scholarship. When I applied I thought it was such a long shot . . . I really debated whether I would apply, especially since I found out about it only 6 days before the deadline. When I hadn't heard from HRSA in quite a while (about a month ago), I started feeling doubtful about the award. That's when I found this site and I realized that no one had heard anything, and I realized that it was perfectly normal for me to be checking the mail, thinking about the mail, obsessing about the mail . . . well you all know. I am so grateful to have found this site and grateful to all of you for sharing your process with me.
I think it would be very difficult to get to this point and then not be awarded the scholarship. The nursing program I am currently enrolled in has a partnership with several local hospitals where the hospital pays for all $28k tuition (14 mo accelerated program) and the student makes a commitment to work for that hospital for 3 yrs + training in exchange. This year there were only 28 sponsorship spots out of 98 students. I was sooooooooooo disappointed that I did not receive the sponsorship with a hospital. I am a single mom (like many of you) and I doubted for a small while whether I was on the 'right' path. However, over my lifetime I have learned that my thoughts are incredibly powerful, and I immediately began thinking and talking about how somehow, there was something better out there for me. I didn't know what it was, but I imagined all sorts of things. It was an intense process, because as I started my program last June, I was constantly confronted with the fact that others received the sponsorship, and I did not. There were so many opportunities for me to plug my positive mantra into my thoughts . . . 'there is something better for me'.
I know I'm rambling, but I got my something better. And we all deserve to live without the stress of super tight finances. We can make this a reality for ourselves. I really believe that.
Good luck to all, and congrats to all of you who got your email today.
So long, DKC:p:p:p
Congrats to everyone who received the award! For those of you reading these post for next year I received all the emails, mistake email from VJ, MC was my analysts and had my credit checked (I have bad credit). I received the award email at 7:35 am PST. My heart goes out to all that did not receive the award this year but don't let this stop you from being the best nurse you can be!
Well All, this will be my last post on this thread. I'll be keeping up with everyone on the FB page. Incompatible Browser | Facebook . Good luck to everyone, hope to see you all on other threads.
***** no nsp for me ********hey all,
here is the scoop. i got all the e-mails but did not have a credit check. i am from pa and had cl as my contact. i just got off the phone with her, very nice and quite civil considering all the calls she must be getting daily. she informed me when i inquired that "unfortunately you have not been selected to receive the scholarship". it only took her a minute to look up my application. further when i asked if she knew how applicants were evaluated she said that "she was not part of the selection process". apparently that is done by someone else or some other group of people. in any case, when i asked if it was still possible that one could be awarded as an alternate she responded that there is a very very slim chance that someone could decline the award but that she was not sure where i was in the alternate ranking. she told me that "you will be receiving a letter by mail", which confirms the fact that those who were not selected get a letter by mail instead.
i get the vibe from all this that almost no scholarships are declined, so if you didn't get it you can just about forget about it. also, i also got the vibe that all of the e-mails that would be going out, already have, though she admitted that she was not sure of that fact.
well i suppose that someone had to get the shaft. i just never thought it would be me seeing as i was in the first group but oh well. to those that got it, congratulations, you people are damn lucky, enjoy the paycheck. to those that didn't, it is going to be another year of hell trying to figure out how to pay for tuition and books, welcome to the "poor club". on the flipside, maybe we are the lucky ones, we can work wherever we want or go right to school for advanced practice / med school.
to the other joe and anyone else: if you're in the same boat as me and did not get a credit check or an e-mail by now saying something to the tune of "congratulations, were going to pay you and your tuition", it doesn't look good. start making other plans.
hey joe. thanks for the welcome into the poor club. i didnt get any emails or calls or credit checks. im assuming i didnt get the scholarship. this is the 2nd year in a row that i have been turned down. im trying to look at the bright side: im in nursing school and graduate in may :), i currently have a job as a tech/cna that pays very well even tho i can only work once a week :), i can do whatever i want after graduation.
ps: i just called and spoke to P? who insists that notifications are still going out until sept 30. i begged him to just tell me if i didnt get it so i could stop worrying about it. he said he honestly didnt know either way. i wanted to tell him about the forum and that i know for a fact that other analysts are giving different info but i figured it might be a HIPAA violation. :)
