The Florida job market cannot be this bad?!

I am still applying to jobs and to no avail! The 27th will make it 1 whole year to the date that I have graduated as a FNP student and Sept will make it a year since I have been certified. I have been on interviews, contacted recruiters, called all physicians that I know, hooked up with all current ARNPs that I know, and revamped my CV. What gives?! Most jobs have passed me by because I only speak one language although I am working on learning others. Another factor is that I do not have experience and I keep getting the "I do not have time to train" phrase. I can't relocate either because of family dynamics and I am beginning to give up. My other classmates are not doing so well either. The managed to get into PT positions but the pay is horrible. Is this what advanced practice nursing all about? I didn't think it would be a field of roses but this is beginning to be nonsense. I have paper cuts on my hands from the amount of CV's I have mailed out. I'm hopeless.

I am considering Texas , the east coast. Actually I am flying to NYC next week for a second interview. I am officially done with Florida.

Way to go MagouRN! Good luck!

what have you heard about texas? I was planning on np, but after reading a few threads like this, I am hesitant (also live in FL).

I have heard really good things about Texas as far as NP practice goes. Florida I think is by far the worst state to practice as an NP. The doctors don't even need to carry and yet for NPs it's a must.

You heard wrong. Texas is a VERY restrictive state. It is absolutely NOT a good practice state.

Yes I just confirmed that by reading the Pearson report 2012. They are an F state as far as restricting the patients choice. I think that's sad, very sad. I guess what I was told was not true. Maybe that person who said it was good and moved to Texas is probably back in Florida now. ?

Ok, I live and work in Texas as an FNP. Every single day I see my own patients, write my OWN prescriptions, refer my own patients, and generally do my own thing. I've been an NP almost 4 years and never once have I felt restricted. I CHOOSE not to have a DEA license...my patients know right up front if they need a controlled drug I'm not the one to go to and lol that is totally fine by me.

I have never, not once, felt restricted in any way. I do consult my collaborating physician 2-4 times per week on more complex cases. But I do not HAVE to do that. For all of these people who are saying texas is a restrictive state PLEASE elaborate...exactly how do you feel restricted?

So ironic. I am doing everything I can to find 4 NP's here in DFW and nothing! They all have jobs before they graduate. I wish you were here!

Forgive my ignorance but where is DFW?

dallas fort worth.

carachel or crunch, do either of you mind elaborating on salary/benefits and type of np? I'm looking at acnp as opposed to fnp, and currently make about 75k with a little over 20 in benefits. this is another reason I'm hesitant to leave...

thanks.

I was only a semester into my FNP program and after realizing how hostile the FMA is to ARNP's that I would never in a million years practice in FL. So after living there since the early 1990's - left. I now live in California. So - if there is nothing keeping you there, go west!

Are you making 75K as an RN? I would say average FNP with a few years experience is around 92-96K..some with benefits and some not. Acute Care...I think they do a bit better. I have a friend who works in the ER and I'm pretty sure she was hauling in close to 60-70 an hour.
