The Dreaded Social Media

Published

So, I'll start off by saying that I'm a nursing student and a dancer (like ballet dancer). I've danced my whole life, and in the past two years I've taken up aerial silk and pole dancing (just as a "for fun" thing) in addition to the classics. What I'm looking for is thoughts on posting my pole dancing pictures on Facebook. I love putting my dance pictures up because it's a HUGE part of my life, and I'd really like to include the pole dancing pictures as well, but I'm concerned about future potential employers looking at them as a negative thing. They're nothing lewd ... I'm always in shorts and a tank top, and it's clear that I'm in my house when they're taken, but I'm just not sure. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

If you have to ask...

why are your photo settings public so anyone can view?

Don't. Employers pay people to scour the internet for the social media accounts of employees and potential employees. You don't want there to be anything on your social media account that might make someone question whether you would be a good hire.

JustBeachy, My profile is private. Only friends can see. I'm just talking about employers because I know they have people go through Facebook accounts. I see absolutely nothing wrong with the photos at all, but people are judgemental so that was my concern.

Ruby, thank you!

Unless you put them as your profile photo they'd have to friend you to se them. But nothing is "private" once posted online. If you think you might get a side-eye by posting pole dancing photos in dance wear (obviously different if wearing lingerie or less) then don't post. Yes there are bored people that get paid to hack social media and internet sites to find negative info.

First never post or take a picture that you would not want the entire world to see. All it takes is one of your friends to share or copy your picture. A picture of you on the pole is not very professional even if it is a fun thing (which it is very fun) but future and even current employers will use it against you!

Not to mention your future in-laws, when that day comes.

If you have to ask then I think you probably already know it might not be a good idea. Better to be safe!

Nothing on the Internet is private. Even if you send a picture of yourself to a "friend" that friend could text blast a bunch of people that picture & boom. That picture is really out there. It's awesome you're a dancer but I wouldn't.

I'm afraid I must agree with the others. Just don't. Don't take that chance. ;)

Yet another vote "no". Privacy settings will not protect you either from employers or predators. Save them for private offline sharing.

When I was hired by a corrections company some years back, they actually required us to give them our social media passwords so that they could monitor employees' accounts. I would not be surprised at a similar requirement for any job connected to law enforcement or national or industrial security.
