My local community hospital didn't make the Best Hospital list but it has made Fortune 500's Best Places to Work list for quite a few years in a row now. Not too shabby for a hospital that is located in the smallest town in one of the smallest states in the USA It ranked 49 of the top 100 companies for 2008! Get this "it received 6,691 applications for 180 open positions in 2007"
It made #21 in 2007
and made #4 in 2006

One of the things taken into the equation is death rate. They, I would think, have a decently high one.
My hospital isn't on the list, but I can't imagine working anywhere else. One of the 'award winning hospitals' can't do pediatric surgery, they send us their neonates that need surgery, usually past the point where surgery is helpful. They hold onto these babies until the last minute, we get them, and many end up dying before they can go to surgery, or they get to surgery and are too far gone to do anything. I don't care about my hospital winning awards, I know that everything we do is for the patients, and we do our best and that is enough for me. I just want to say though, that award winning hospitals aren't always everything they seem to be.
