I mean SMOKING !!!!!!!!!!!

I know this has nothing to do with Nursing School for most people...but for me it does.

1.I start NS in August...will be working less So I wont be able to afford smoking.

2.I will be in Clinicals...not really a place to step out there and have a puff.

3.I will be studying ALL THE TIME, and since I do not smoke in my home, I really dont have time to step outside and lose my focus

4. I feel terrible and I want to be healthy for school :redbeathe

5. I'm just plain TIRED of the hold it has on me :angryfire

6. My car stinks !!

Please share your quit smoking tips with me.....I need some encouragment !!!!!!

HAHA I had quit smoking and then 2 years later towards the end of my first semester, I started back up. I really hate smoking...but love it at the same time...and decided, I really need to quit so at the end of second semester I quit. I quit cold turkey...but that's not so hard for me because my husband despises cigarettes so he's kinda my motivator. I'd rather kiss my husband than smoke, ya know :D Plus, I prayed to God to deliver me from the cigarettes. I never had any cravings!

I've heard people give Chantix great reviews so maybe you could go to your doctor and ask him about that and any other smoking cessation products out there that may work for you.

Good luck! I wish you all the success at this because I know how hard it is.

my mom smoked for over 20 years and stopped when she became a nurse. when she got breast cancer it metastasized to her lungs very rapidly and her lungs were riddled with cancer. her brother smoked all his life and got lung cancer and died of it 6 months later. i worked for years on a step down unit where we had a lot of copders that we got to know very well. all were former smokers. many nurses have difficulty tolerating the constant hacking up of the sputum that goes on with these patients. if they survive long enough, they get trachs, put on ventilators and develop cor pulmonale. i had one patient who was trached and whose heart just finally gave out and she died while on a ventilator--the ventilator just kept cycling and breathing for her even though she had died. and, a number of the copders eventually got lung cancer that got found on x-ray. of course, no surgery can be done for them because they cannot undergo or tolerate general anesthesia which is unfortunate since their tumors are caught very early.

you don't want to get lung cancer. have something planned to keep you very busy when you do stop smoking so it won't be as traumatic for you. good luck.

I have never smoked or drunk alcohol. My father was an alcoholic and a chain smoker and none of his six children ever smoked or drunk alcohol. I was turned off smoking by my father. He eventually died of a massive stroke after he stopped smoking for twenty years.

I smoked for the better part of 17 years, started seriously smoking when I was 14, and finally quit for the last time at 31. I smoked roughly half a pack per dayand I also smoked marijuana occasionally. I had some smoke free periods, during pregnancy and I went for 6-8 months on two occassions but I always eventualy went back to smoking when I got stressed out.

You know what helped me quit for good? Nursing school! During my third month of nursing school and my first clinical rotation with the help of the nicotine patch I was able to quit and I know now that it's for good. Even under the most stressful situations I have zero desire to buy a pack of cigarettes or smoke weed. The thought is actually repulsive to me now because I have seen the damage that cigs cause.

Until I went to nursing school I thought that cigs only caused cancer and since I have no family history of any kind of cancer I thought the chances of my getting cancer were like zero, so why quit?

I had no idea about the connection between PVD, HTN, CAD, COPD, and many other diseases until I saw it for myself. Cigarettes are truly the devil's own poison and looking at the patients whose lives are ruined from smoking helped me lose all desire to ever want to smoke again.

Thanks Everyone.

I have smoked for 26 years...also started at 14, I also have had a few times I quit, but always seemed to go back to it.

I think Im just ready to stop.

I sent my post this morning, went outside and had 1 cigarette, put it out half way, took a shower and applied a patch ( I had some in the closet from the last time i tried to quit)

Going on 4 hrs...and thats big for me

It's not easy but it's doable and I'm rooting for you! 4 hours is a start...set mini goals...make your next goal 8 hours and when you reach that goal set a new one. Soon it will be one day and then one week and so on. I wasn't sure I could do it and now it's been over 2 years!

Thanks Everyone.

Good for you!!

I hope this is the beginning of something good for you. I can't imagine how hard it is tp stop. I was a 'casual smoker' (many believe it is the same thing, but I'm not going to get into that :smokin: ). My boyfriend is a smoker (as were many of the people I had dated, including ex husband, so it bacame more of a social thing for me). One day, about a year and a half ago, our students were conducting a health fair, and one of the groups was about the ill effects of smoking. It just happened to be on the day of the great american smoke out. Something clincked in me, and I said to myself "What am I doing to my body". I never looked back.

I hope you have the strength to do the same.

In high school I career-shadowed a nurse. One of the first patients that she took care of had really bad lung cancer from smoking. I will never forget him. He starting to cough and it sounded like he was drowning. We went in there to help him and he started to projectile cough bits and pieces of tissue which I know were not blood clots. So I asked the nurse what it was and she said that he was literally coughing up his own lungs. He passed away later that night. So thanks to him I will NEVER ever smoke!!!

It sounds like you have taken the first important step with recognizing that you need to quit smoking. See if this website can help you come up with a plan to be successful kicking the smoking habit. Good Luck!

I quit cold turkey twice once for a year and the other time for almost 2 years but I always end up going back! I to want to quit before nursing school. I think I'm going to try Chantrix, I've heard good things about it.
