When people find out I'm a nurse these days, they keep thanking me for my service, like they do to the military. I want to roll my eyes at this point. Is this happening to you?

Subees comment dropped when I replied. Who knows ?‍♀️

As far as pleasant vs unpleasant, it takes all kinds of views to make the world go 'round.  But when it's a constant barrage so far off the topic, that no one even remembers the original topic, it's a problem. I don't expect fairy dust, unicorns, and rainbows. I do hope to know the topic of conversation

No one mentioned pleasantness or otherwise. It was a direction to wandering off topic. To the point, no one has a clue what the original topic was. As far as pleasant vs unpleasant, it takes all kinds of views to make the world go 'round ?

Emergent mentioned "unpleasantness" in this thread.  Enquiring mind just wanted to know  why that word was being applied to this thread.

I changed my reply a bit. But realistically,  when I joined this forum 2003, we could discuss varying points of view without getting our panties in a wad, or degrading the other poster's point of view. Many threads have started to devolve into degrading others, political undertones with degrading themes, and just general nastiness to the tune of no longer even knowing what the original topic was. As has been discussed in another thread, many have left, or reply minimally, because, who wants all that drama? ?

I’ve lived in four countries (I’m American and am back in the USA now) and one thing I’ve noticed is that people looove to hate on their home countries. It’s a national pastime in most nations, as it is for the poster who wrote that all Americans are “all about the exterior”. Not sure how that would be relevant to being obsessed with the military anyway, but the poster seems to have a chip on their shoulder.

I don't hate my country, I hate the superficiality. Skinny people and fat shaming? Straight white teeth? Always in debt from huge mortgages because of keeping up with the Joneses? Cosmetic surgery? Ageism? You want me go on? These things happen in few other countries and to a far lesser amount.

Why when we are so isolated and protected are we involved in so many wars  compared to other people? Tax payer dollars? Could it be that lobbyists from the defense contractors to oil etc place us there where our ignorant youth has to be sacrificed?

I am also well traveled and lived in several countries and no one treats their citizens as bad. People are being bankrupted from medical bills, homeless from foreclosures, gunned down by the police and mass shooters, over 50% of the population can't afford a $1500 bill yet we are supposedly the richest country in the world, people in food lines. Want me to go on?

This country exists because of people not being satisfied with their lot in Europe and decided to change things, but you feel I guess that protests should be squelched by being run down legally by a vehicle and that would be OK with you!

Lots of liberal cliches strung together. You must be 'woke'?

And that's the biggest cliche of them all.

Also it's lazy and shows no evidence of original thought (Shakes head slowly).

Sad, Emergent, you can do better.☹️ ☹️?

LOL, so sad ?

What's really pathetic is lack of original thought, but just parroting ideological cliches. Especially ones that are utterly off topic to the original post. ?

It's like having a discussion with a tape recorder. No exchange of ideas is possible...

Are you saying that none of the above is true, or, if it is true, we should just dismiss it?  I would have no problem living in a country where there is less obscene wealth for the few and extreme poverty for the many.  It's called Iceland!:)  It would take you a few minutes riding around in Riyjavik to realize that you have traveled into a wealthier or poorer neightborhood.  There are differences but more nuanced.  I have no problem 1ith 100% literacy.

But you are also "just parroting ideological cliches" only yours is from the right. So are you saying that if it's liberal it's wrong but it's is OK for you to abuse people with words like "woke?" Because it certainly came over as a term of abuse. My initial thought when I read it was, "That's nasty."

I'm not certain your comments were really off topic. It seems to me that discussion of national economics and the compensation, or more precisely lack thereof of the first responders and other essential personnel is entirely relevant.

I don't want to be thanked for my service, I want to be fairly compensated for it. I will accept a "thank you" graciously but the capitalism run wild of this country makes me so angry.

Nurses are not by any means impoverished, but tell me how it's OK that we work with substandard equipment, inadequate staffing, management that is questionable at best while the health care systems were granted tons of money during the pandemic crisis that in most cases not a single dime of ever went into the pockets of the employees, Yet the CEO's of these health care corporations were raking in record salaries and bonuses!

How about the Jeff Bezos of the world that made more personal profit in 1 minute that his "essential" workers make in a year?  Those essential staff working the gas stations, grocery stores, big box retailers, warehousing and shipping for all the online shopping are in most cases making minimum wage or barely above.

The rich keep getting richer at the expense of the wage workers. So yes, I'll graciously accept that "thank you" from a well intentioned stranger. That stranger is in the same sinking ship as the rest of us who will be at least partially financing those corporate bailouts to the ultrarich for our lifetimes and beyond.
