Thank you gift for a preceptor?

Published

My preceptor has been really wonderful and supportive and I'd like to get her a thank you gift when my orientation is over. Any suggestions?

Just acknowleging that you appreciate what was done is great!!!!! Many nurses do not like to precept..... anything will be greatly appreciated. If I got Starbucks and didn't drink coffee.... I'd get another drink!!! How thoughtful of you!!! :lol2:

A Starbucks gift card (if she drinks coffee this will be obviously good, if she doesn't she can always eat or drink something else!) a thank you note, and letting the NM know in writing how your preceptor helped you and how much you appreciated that.

I've received two very thoughtful gifts from - one was a stethoscope cover as my preceptee had been paying attention to the fact that I had complained about my stethoscope giving me a rash on my neck from the latex. The second one made me a beautiful handmade sign with my name on it for my locker. Both very personal and very much appreciated. Otherwise, yes, Starbucks gift cards are pretty universal, they make things other than coffee, and can easily be re-gifted if the receiver absolutely can not stand Starbucks.

My preceptor was a charge nurse, she had all this stuff she carried with her, so I got her this with her name and title on it. She really like it.

A new grad R.N. I precepted got me a gift card to Dunkin Donuts. It was very sweet and I enjoyed the freee cups of hot cocoa. I am sure whatever you get your preceptor he or she will appreciate it, as it shows you appreciate his or her time and teaching.

I would suggest a gift card over nick nack type stuff.

If you are having trouble finding something relatively inexpensive but thoughtful, ask your preceptor in a very casual way what they enjoy doing outside of work. I had one preceptee ask me this, and I talked her ear off about how much I love saltwater fishing. She got me a decal for my car in the shape of a blue marlin. I will always treasure this thoughtful yet inexpensive gift, because she dialed into what I liked and that meant more to me than anything else.

Besides doing a good job, I always found nice hand lotion and soap a wonderful gift.

I made it a point to ask her what her favorite restaurant was about a week before my Preceptorship was over. I gave her a gift card there in a thank you card that I wrote her a personal message in. I also sent a thank you card to the birthcare director thanking her to allow me to precept on her floor and complimented my Preceptorship in the card. I also included a copy of my cover letter and resume with the thank you card to the birthcare director.

as others have stated, no gift is really necessary. the best thank you is a sincere and detailed one about exactly what they did to help you. also, as others have stated letting the higher ups know how helpful your preceptor was is nice too.
