Textbooks for Nursing School

Published

Has anyone dealt with a legitimate bookseller for buying used nursing textbooks in reasonable condition? I know Amazon et al, offer used books through different sellers, but I'm looking for personal experiences and recommendations from people within the nursing community. Thanks for the help!

I have bought a few through EBAY and you can also check with your College Bookstore they sometimes sell used editions. I know when I was in school some of the girls would switch off depnding on which semester they were in. I hope that helps. Good luck with your Nursing!

I got 90% of my books from Half.com (an ebay company). They saved me tons of money! :D

I've used Amazon and Barnes and Noble and have been happy with both. I prefer Amazon though.

I am actually almost done selling most of my books on Amazon. Hopefully people are honest about the condition of the book as I am. I've bought a few used books from Amazon and it was great. However, I still get a little worried of how it would be once I got it. I think the answer is you just don't know until you get it and if you don't like it I think you can return it.

Be careful of Half.com. They have a "buyer protection policy" that isn't. I ordered a book there that I never received, after contacting the seller with no response I filed a claim. That was in August. They are still "investigating." Meanwhile, I am out over $100

I've used half.com a lot. It's always been great for me. I think over the years I saved myself at least 4-500 bucks in books.

Have you tried Craigslist in your area? How about the student announcement boards in the school you are planning to attend? The prices are always great, books are in fantastic condition and you might even get some advice from the seller on how to pass a class or what instructor to avoid. After all, they just went through it. Good luck.

I've bought used books for several years online and haven't had any problems. I use a book search website that has an option to search for the lowest online price. The site is www.Fetchbook.info I have ordered books from many of the dealers on fetchbook. I generally use paypal for paying.

Before purchasing I always check:

Cost of shipping

Does the book come with it's CD

Condition of the Book -- highlighting etc.

Here is another allnurses post about used books. Some of these students were discussing the value or not of having the books access codes and ebooks.

Where I'm at the wait to get into nursing school is 3-4 semesters, so I thought it would be fun to order one or two editions previous of the currently required books. I bought 6 books from 6 different sellers on ebay, all for less than $10 each with shipping. They also had current editions, but of course they were more expensive. I have heard one or two editions previous will work for most courses. You should be able to ask your instructor if previous editions are acceptable. I would have paid over $400 for all these brand new. It was only about $60, and they are in really nice condition. I chose most ones that had the CD, they were never even opened. I'm sure they will have different books required by the time I get in, but for $60 I can get a head start on reading, so I won't be so overwhelmed later on.

I wasn't saying to never use half.com, as I have used it often in the past and will continue to do so in the future. It was just a word of caution. My best advice is to make sure you check seller ratings, etc. I got lax because I assumed that if something happened the buyer protection policy would cover my butt and that was not the case.

i understand how financially draining it is to have to purchase nursing textbooks. i've used half.com, barnes and nobles, and cragislist. however, i'm a pretty picky person when it comes to my textbooks... so i found that i ended up buying them new. if you can, see if you can purchase books from those who are a semester or a year ahead of you or look into buying textbooks that are about an edition older (they're generally the exact thing of the newest edition, maybe just a word or two has been revised) because they run waaaaaaay cheaper.
