Hi! I'm interested in Telephonic Case Management. Is there anyone here who is doing this type of position? Do hospitals hire this type of position? :redpinkheThanks!
I love CM... there are many different areas you can go into. Salary depends on what area you live but it's about 60,000 - 80,000. Several positions here on the West Coast post salaries about 80,000. Kaiser Permanente just posted a CM salary $88,000-111,000!... I work from home and they set up a home office for the CM. Not all CM's with Aetna are home office though but many have potential to transition to home.
I am wanting to get into working at home, have read alot of comments on it and am very interested, anyone know how or where to go to start. I have 22 yrs experience and have worked in L&D, Nursery, NICU, Peds and womens floor, oncology, med surg floors,, post op. home health for 5 yrs. I am an RN, in school for BSN and MSN and when I get done I will have my Certificate for teaching.
CM jobs are very difficult to come by in the hospital. It's what i really, really wanted to do. I did interview in the hospital for a position in CM. They never had intentions of hiring me without experience, they interviewed me as a favor to my uncle......
They did give me good tips though. Take a CM course at a local college. Also, getting a position as a CM with an insurance company is the best route to go and they do hire without CM experience. I am in the middle of the interview process with a a large insurance company (chose not to say until all is done) and they said the job IS stressful and busy, but on a whole different level and you will not be bored it's very interesting and forever changing. This position is for Worker's comp claims.
I interviewed with HBCBS myself. The worst interview ever. I was interviwed by 2 non-clinical people. No clue about nursing. They only asked me an hour of internet generated general interview questions that were just plain stupid in my opinion. A few to understand how I would handle certain situations, sure..... I get that. But nothing about my skills and knowledge as a nurse. So poo to them.
This is an office based telephonic nursing position, but I hear there are plenty from home.
I know this thread is old, but, I started in an ins company doing UR and moved to CM. I am now looking to move on from that as I have been doing this for 6 years and I am one that likes constant challenge and learning new things. Not to say CM is not challenging but you can get good at it and not have that same edge of excitement to it.
Insurance companies do hire w/o CM experience as I know plenty who have been hired to CM in the two companies I have worked for over the past 6yrs.

Hi Christdied4us310,
We have about the same years of nursing experience. I have not been in nursing too long but set out to pursue working in a professional office nursing environment and I did it. Most of the CM positions I see whether its office or home based require about 3 yrs nursing experience and prefers CM experience. I worked less than a yr as a home health CM before applying to ins companies and then I started getting calls from Aetna, Liberty Mutual, and others for interviews. A little exposure to any type of CM wouldn't hurt. I would definitely try applying for positions at this point... I just saw a Behavioral Health RN CM position posted and it did ask for at least 4 yrs of experience and your almost there. Don't forget to look into CM Workers Comp or Disability positions as well. Again, just look out for high case loads! APS Healthcare and Coventry Healthcare are also hiring... if they are in your area. What's nice is if you get into a CM position and don't like it, you can transfer around positions w/in the company. Aetna asks that you don't leave them but move internally to what is a better fit.
Take care and good luck!
