This topic was created for those who will be applying to Tarrant County College's Fall 2014 Nursing Program. The dialog is open for those who have never applied and those who have applied multiple times. Let's discuss our frustrations, stats, best practices for study and the HESI, where you are at achieving your goal, and if you plan to apply anywhere else.
I have applied and was turned down 3.50 Science, 90 HESI, 970 Critical thinking (for another nursing program). I was knocked down, but I refuse to stay there.
Let's talk!
yeah that's ridiculous. I agree with you nursing hopeful. People who don't have there requirements shouldn't even have been allowed to get that far into the program or even in the program. Especially when there are us who really want it and make sure all of our stuff is taken care of. And making it difficult for the alternate who gets to come in already having missed a couple of weeks.

You know... I actually think that is unfair... to be thrown into a "course' that is already moving.
The ramp up alone must be stressful. I really wish they would change their policy on that. It would make it easier on them and us as applicants. The benefits alone would say them time and money. Go figure
Thanks! I will not give up. getting two A's and 2 B's wasn't easy for me. If I have to take a class again to get an A I will. I feel Im just soooo close. one of my B's I was 6 points away out of the 1000 to get an A. I would of rather of been 50 points away then so close it hurt. I know Im not the only one

Been there JBDB...
Just a heads up, one of the major points for TCC and I am sure most schools is not abusing internet and social media. This means anything negative about patients (once you get to the program) or faculty members, including the school. They make it a point to advise students if at all possible to just stay off the internet and social media until you finish the program as to not put yourself in risk of being dismissed for anything inappropriate. I can totally respect yalls feelings and frustrations as I was there last application period but I would be mindful in posting negativity about the school you are applying for. You never know who is reading what you say.

I am sure that everyone appreciates the heads up and no one has or will ever speak about a patient as I am sure all nurses would quickly take it down. As for our frustrations, they are just that... Frustrations. We are entitled to them, they bring about change, and if no one speaks up, things such as abuses from teachers and the like happen. I for one am not a child and will take responsibility for anything I say as long as I am within the sites terms and conditions to do so. We are all here to encourage, vent, cry, and provide advice. For that I appreciate the warning but I will never be afraid to speak on the right, wrong, and just plain goofy.
My best advice for all hopefuls is if you are concerned about the way admissions takes place or about your GPA and where it stands with the rest to make an appointment with the nursing department for a counsel session. They are willing to sit down with you and go over where you stand and what you need to be competitive. Generally 4.0 and 85 Hesi and above got in. After that GPA's varied from just those I have spoke with.
Nursinghopeful817, it is interesting you bring that up. I just completed my application today and noticed that, too. I am wondering here: colleges obviously can't discriminate against someone based on weight/gender/age/race, etc., but if they know what people look like, doesn't that give them an opportunity to discriminate? First impressions are important, and suppose someone sends in their photo, and they look like a druggie (even if they're not), aren't they going to use that first impression against them? I have no idea why they want a picture, perhaps to see how healthy/clean cut you look. I am curious about this as well. Any ideas?

A picture with worth a thousand words as they say. I really do not like the idea and like you , wonder why they want it. It does give first impressions and agree that it may pose an unfair advantage / disadvantage for every applicant. It opens the door for bias because it allows assumptions to be made outside of the academic. I am interested in knowing why this is being done and plan to ask the question.

Wow. Which is why they should request everything up front with the disclaimer that "this does not mean you are selected for the program until official offer is received." For that reason, I like El Centro and TCU's NursingCas better.
The pressure part I get. It will truly make you wonder why your doing this. Good luck to you and those hanging in there!
