Taking NCLEX for the 2nd time Aug. 14 and need a study buddy!

Published

i graduated this past may 09 and took boards june 24. i didn't pass and my job has agreed to work with me in hopes that i will stay with them. so, i'm working 8-5 monday thru friday and all i'm doing is studying until i retake boards august 14th!! i really need help! i have the saunders book and am going to get the 2010 kaplan review book this weekend, but i feel like i'm missing something important. my job has been so great in working with me and not only do i not want to fail for my own reasons but i don't want my work to think they wasted their time on me. i am a great nurse! i know that, but i don't know how to answer questions. i felt as though the nclex didn't reflect my knowledge and competency as a rn. any advice would be much appreciated!!

I know, this first few days is hard. And you just took your exam. Let me know when your ready to get started.

yes! I have been doing a little bit of studying...but not as hardcore as before when I was taking it the first time. I plan to do kaplan again...sometimes I just don't know how to start or how to approach it... katie...how do you start and get back in track?

ujones00... yes, i think you need time to relax a bit... then get back to business... I am so glad we are all doing this! It helps to know that you are not alone...

Coppin. where do you work if you dont mind me asking?

I start at Shady Grove next month.

ok, so this is the plan i have made myself.

in my calendar i have 4 things to cover each day. in 2 weeks if i stick to my 4 chapters a day i would have completely read the entire saunders book with review topics and questions with rationales. for today i have:

1. leadership, delegation and priortizing

2. memorizing my lab values and knowing how to apply them

3. nutrition

4. blood topics

if it will help yall (i know that texan) i will submit any info that is important key information and we can discuss it. tomorrow i have:

1.postioning clients after surgeries

2. care of pt with a tube

3. starting to review female repro system

4. and ob assessment

then on Friday i have:

1.prenatal period

2. risks for preg patients

3. labor and delivery

4. probs during labor and delivery

after that i will then start growth and development, milestones for children pedit issues (neuro, musculo, endocrine, resp and cardio) and then the first week in august will be review of all the systems for the adult. this puts me a finishing the book reviews one week before boards. I will then do kaplan strategy review in the evenings.

how does this sound? if you have saunders we will follow along together. if not we will just review as i post the material. if this doesn't help you guys let me know. i don't want to overwhelm you but this way it will be a complete and thorough review

katie, are these chapters in the saunders book? I can only study from after 12 since I work in the mornings :( Do you plan to read each chapter and do the questions in the book or CD? I have the saunders book too (i borrowed it from a friend).

yes maam, these are all chapters in the saunders book. i borrowed it from an instructor and i don't have the cd, but the way i broke it down is to read the topics for the day and do the questions in the book for each chapter. then when i have finished reviewing it all i will do the comprehensive exam in the back of the book to see what i'm still weak in. i have the saundes 3rd edition (its blue) and i've broken it down by chapters like is it in the contents.

so should i read saunders or kaplan?

ujones00...i'm at the northern VA area. you, what part of MD?

katie, i have the 4th edition. I think I might do the same thing. But sometimes the book overwhelms me coz it's so big... ugh! I need motivation... I plan to maybe go to the library or somewhere where I could study after work.

so should i read saunders or kaplan?

i'm doing saunders during the day (the way i broke it up into sections) and kaplan at night (i dont have the book yet) just to help me with the strategies. I'm mainly focusing on saunders during the day because the review content is really good and i feel like i need to review alot of material to get a good grasp on it and the questions are challenging.
