Taking away chairs from nursing station

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I work at a nursing home and is my night off and I just got word that administrator has taking away our chairs from the nurses station to get us to work harder. There has been lack of documentation in all units. People think he did this because a power trip. The administrator is only 24 and he is new and he's ****** a few people off. I think it gonna cause a lot of conflict but if people accept this change, it could be a positive change. I have charted standing and it's taken less time to chart. Less time charting means more time supervising and more time at patients bedside which overall will improve patient care. I totally get it but I will take some time adjusting.

pts think we are working harder when we are standing to chart as opposed to sitting..... so ... just another way society has to appeal to the lowest thinking of us...... last few timea I went to a dr's appointment s/he told me a disclaimer of how they are charting on computer while looking at me. I know this since I am a nurse but ai knew dra had to chart since about middle school .....

Oh yes, another person in mgt who wants to "change the world".

Here's a thought for you on that one: take the chairs away because you feel the staff would document better if they were forced to stand and compose their notes after a long day of running up and down the halls pushing an incredibly heavy med cart.

The ONLY thing you are going to accomplish by doing that to your staff is finding even poorer documentation because the nurse wrote the very bare minimum so that they could go somewhere else in the facility and sit down and rest their legs, feet and/or back.

Also, to the member who started the thread, IF you don't think this is a bad idea, I have the feeling you've not been a nursing professional for very long.

Hi KRSLPN,

Maybe I didn't make my note clear. It's not that we have to stand and chart; it's that we have to stand ALL THE TIME. Mgt took our chairs away from the hall where we have to use our computers on wheels and we aren't allowed in the nurses's station...oh, sorry, I mean clinical station, anymore. It's doctor's only. They, of course have chairs in there....and nice, super large computer monitors, which we do not have access to, so therefore cannot use.

Yeah, this is us, a Magnet certified hospital.

^^ well, thats because the MD's are the "biggest customer" .

Nurses are the peons

But standing makes you think better! Who is most in need of thinking best? THE MDs!!!!! Take away their chairs before they kill someone!!!

I think it's an awesome idea to take away the nurses' chairs to make them chart more. After all, it's common sense that if you make something harder, people will do more of it.

Hello varicose veins, puffy feet and ankles, and back problems! Geez Louise, never have I heard such a ridiculous idea before in my life. Taking away chairs to improve charting?! The complete opposite will happen. And why in the world would the chairs be reserved for doctors and case managers when they spend the least time on the floor?! If this ever happened in my workplace, a mutiny would occur

I'm so sick of management implementing new "policies" because they think nurses don't work hard enough!

Taking away chairs? I mean honestly I can't even.

Before I got in nursing the few jobs I worked prior required standing. I don't view it as cruel. Lots of jobs require standing. The cna stand on there feet all the time, so why can't we.[/quote']

I'm a cna and I sit whenever I can! (Not that that's always possible) if I'm tired and I have a minute I am sitting down. Good grief what is wrong with these people?! Nursing is way different and more physically demanding than other jobs like retail where you stand all day.

I've never had anyone tell me I couldn't sit for a minute if I needed to but i also do my work.

They'll change their tune when people start passing out or calling in sick......

Why don't they take away access to water while they're at it.

When I worked at a nursing home I saw my CNAs sitting when they had the chance.

If administration thinks it's a good idea to be on our feet for 8-12+ hours then so should they. Because obviously they don't have anything better to do than think of stupid changes than this. Why are case managers & doctors allowed to sit & document when they are barely around? What next, no lunch break?

People are gonna be lazy & find ways to not do work regardless. Removing chairs is just cruel.

How can you talk on the phone in a patients room without violating HIPAA? There are times you need to have a computer to yourself....in private.
I'm confused........

I think you misunderstood....I am outraged that administration is implementing this.....it's insulting and degrading...removing the chairs is the assumption that nurses are lazy and they are treating us like 3 year old children....instead if the professionals that we are....I don't think nurses should be forced to document in the patients room.

ESME, maybe the quote thingy didn't work properly for me. That was aimed at the mindless idiots at the workplace, not you.;)

They'll have you hand wash the floors while you're down there :(

Lol!!!

Not trying to impress anyone. This is getting irritating. No one sees my point. What is wrong with spending less time at the desk. Its healthier to move Around. I've charted not sitting down and it saves time, for me it does. You guys are making it out like it is standing in one spot and no breaks.

You are missing the point. How disrespectful this is to an entire profession!!! If you have RN after your name, (in addition to degrees and certifications) you are being treated as an imbecile. WHY?
