Tactful way to address staff issue

Published

Hello all!

I was hoping to get some ideas on how to address an issue with some staff that I had this year. My clinic has 2 doors - one leading to the hallway and another leading to the administrative area. Several staff members use the clinic continuously throughout the day as a shortcut to the administrative area. This is distracting and annoying. I do not mind the rare cut through, but a couple of staff members are in and out over a dozen times each day. The entrance to the administrative area is like 15 feet from the clinic entrance so the shortcut is really not much of a shortcut. I want to put a stop to this practice next year. Any suggestions/rationale for doing so?

Thanks!

YOU SHALL NOT PASS!

Nice solutions! My office walls are windows that look out onto the secretary's space which is where EVERY one passes and people always poke their heads in to check on Johnny. I really want to change it, but my thought is that it's kind of good if people are covering the health office on my break or something they can keep an eye on the kids (elementary). What do you guys think, should I try to rearrange? I have a few privacy screens to work with...

What about covering some parts of the windows up with health-related posters? We have a day care at our school for staff with windows that face out into the hall. To prevent people from looking all day (especially during nap time), they put pictures the kids "colored" up to cover half the windows...just enough to let light in, but enough that people cannot easily peer in.

Or come in on your weekend with a couple of cans of that light frosted-glass paint and some of that blue painter's masking tape to make a sharp top edge about 6 feet above the floor. They might not even notice, or somebody might say, "Is there something different about this?"

Or go to Home Depot and get those colorful window films . . . . I just googled it and they are at WalMart and Lowes and other places as well. I have some. I like them!

My office is not accessible with the regular internal key, so I keep it locked! WE can can egress but not easily accessible for access.

1. A curtain

2. a sign that says "NO CUT THROUGHS."

Don't worry about making enemies. I did this years ago and everyone has forgotten about it and developed new habits. I would also address it if anyone does cut through after the sign goes up.

Start telling everyone who comes through your door to stop doing it or you'll send a note home telling their "parent" they are being disruptive in class. Or, start walking through their offices each day at random times - go in, sit down, get back up, walk out. When someone asks what you are doing, respond with "Well, you do this several times a day in my office, I just figured you'd be okay if I did it in yours?"

In all seriousness, I'd see if they can change the lock on the administrative door for you so that only you and the janitors have a key. Lock the door. When people try to cut through, tell them that door has been locked to ensure student safety and privacy.

Our policy does not allow for window covering. Supposedly an edict from the State Police...(They need to see into all rooms in the event of an emergency/lockdown.)

I call BS. But the custodians took my blinds away! :(

I plan to get curtains so i can leave them open generally, but close if I have a privacy need.

Wow - so no privacy? That would bug me so much.

It makes me crazy.....I feel like I am in a fishbowl.
