I am glad to talk to young people or others with an interest in nursing, but I am careful to not paint too rosey a picture...as it takes a lot of emotional and physical stamina to be a nurse today...plus intelligence, flexibility, dedication, and lots of body armour...LOL!

I try to give an honest overview and pros and cons and let them take it from there. My good CNA's who enjoy what they do I also encourage to advance their education...many say they're not interested and just enjoy their CNA role, (wouldn't like nurse responsibilities) which is also wonderful!

The toughest questionfor me is "Would you do it again."

Just last week I told my hairdresser and the woman waxing my eyebrows to do it. They have the people skills and some of the anatomy down already!

No. And never will. With all the career options open to young people, why choose nursing? Why work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays? Why give up on a life?

The demand is so high in all occupations now, why not choose something that you can be in a groove with the majority of the people of the world?

Why expose yourself to all the viral, etc diseases of mankind?

Reading this BB, how many of these nurses have had a conversation with a professional besides a nurse in the last month. ? Who has any recent experience with literature, law, politics, fashion?

Our profession simply does not lend itself to a well rounded, informed individual. Most nurses are terribly dull.

Witness the intellectual deterioration of most threads....they start out pretty good and rapidly capsize into banality and locker room topics.

Over 10 years or so ago I used to encourage people to go into it. Since about 1993, when I saw what was happening to health care and, specifically, to nurses, I stopped.

Yes, Yes ,Yes .... please think about it , come to work with me one night, and if it still feels right join the ranks. There is nothing finer than mentoring a new grad and seeing them grow and flourish!

My wife is seriously thinking about going into nursing. This week, She has two different interviews for two different nursing college programs.

I just recently found out about her plans. I was, to be quite honest, very surprised! She said that she's been thinking about this decision for the past two years; she regrets not starting two years ago. Go figure!

There are a number of reasons for her decision to go into nursing. She's been working in the healthcare industry on and off for about 20 years. First as a nursing assistant, then a quasi medical assistant, and now a medical biller and medical transcriptionist. She says that she is aware of the "risks and benefits" of the nursing profession, and feels that, overall, the nursing profession will offer her the widest opportunities for personal and professional growth. . . and money.

Amy will make a wonderful nurse. She is a very nurturing person and certainly smart enough!

I have encouraged people who have shown the interest and the qualities. I love nursing. I agree with the other poster about the work being very challenging; it can eat you up and spit you out. It is important, to me, to keep my options open and my direction focused on where I want to be and where I should be headed in my career to keep it all in a positive light.

Just thught I would add my 2 cents! I have enjoyed reading all these wonderful responses. I think hospital nursing has changed for the best and this nursing shortage has opened up more opportunities. When I hear an RN complaining, I think "Get up and Move!" Now we have so many choices! Agency, travel, 3-twelves, weekend onlys, etc. Work is available throughout the USA and abroad. Not too many other professions offer this flexibility.
