From the pre-nursing board there were a number of us waiting to hear from Downstate, and by now quite a few have been accepted!
So please, introduce yourselves here in the Nursing Student forum, and let's continue the discussion as we prepare to start classes in 3 months.
Where are you holding so far? Medical clearance, CPR, supplies, figuring out your finances and schedules for the next year... let's discuss!
I recommend Abebooks.com for textbooks. They always have the lowest prices, IME.
Also, use your judgment and decide whether you can save even more by going with an older edition. As a rule of thumb, I buy the most recent edition of books that teach actual nursing procedures and techniques, because I want the most up-to-date information. But if it's more a nursing philosophy/history type of book, I'll look for an older edition.
thanks a lot for the list, this is great. I am also a fan of older editions, international editions can also be a really good bargain.
Also, did everyone get the email about registration? Do any current students, or anyone that might know a student have any recommendations on what professors to take?
hmmm,
the pathophysiology text is getting some pretty bad reviews from nursing students and instructors at amazon.com.
i was worried about this class the most, i think patho and pharmacology are going to be the hardest classes. and we all know from our undergraduate experience that a great text makes all the difference... i think i'll wait for the first class to see if the professor really wants us to get that book, or we can use another one.
i have found a former student of suny downstate Accelerated BSN somewhere else on allnurses.com not a long time ago. i will try to search through my posts and ask her to take a look at the list and tell us which books we will never use.
Has anyone been studying/preparing for summer courses? Has anyone reviewed any nursing books like dosage calculation, nursing notes/process, medical vocabulary? Does anyone know if we are required to pass a math test in the beginning of each session?
I read this thread earlier and thought that we all could benefit from the discussion

I am brushing up on my A&P. I also have some old nursing textbooks (the ones for school didn't come yet) and I've been reading through them, but I think the A&P is most helpful.
My basic math is fine. I don't really need practice in decimals, percents and fractions.
As far as pharma goes, whenever there's a section in A&P that discusses drugs and their effects, I pay extra-close attention. I also pay attention to injection sites, names of muscles, veins, major body landmarks, that sort of thing.
If it's the same as it was in 2007, I used every one of those books with the exception of the Leadership course - no exams in Leadership - just tons of papers, a group presentation (lots of group presentations in that program) and a clinical and mandatory class time. But in everyone of the other courses you will have to crack everyone of those books. The exam questions are often obsure - I had to read them with a fine tooth comb. In Patho, the study guide really helped me - it saved me actually cause I could not finish the indepth text book reading - that was a summer course and very quick. You dont really need the clinical handbooks they have in the bookstore. The pych course is the second summer. Hope this helps. Oh, and even for the Nursing Today course - you've got to study the book to pass the exams. Or I did anyway. And in Nursing Assessment - the exams are harder than you may think. Be prepared. I failed the midterm and had to break my behind to catch up! - Durable

There is one more book... but I didn't write the complete title and I think the ISBN is wrong. I have to go to Downstate on monday for my 2nd PPD, so I will stop by the bookstore to get the correct title on this book:
**Community Health & Nursing 9780781765846
Some of these titles don't seem to match the courses that we are taking during the summer (like the Psychiatry/Mental Health Book).
I will be taking the course names and numbers with me on monday to confirm the list, so please check back later on during the week to see if there are any changes to the list.
