SUNY Downstate ABSN 2020-2021

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone,

I've started this thread so we can discuss and share our experiences applying to SUNY's ABSN program for 2020. This is my second time applying. I waited till the very last day of the deadline to submit my application last year (I knowww) since I had taken the TEAS and had just gotten the results. However, I've already submitted my application for the upcoming year and hope to get a call for an interview. Looking forward to chatting with you all.

Sidenote: I really like the upgrade they did to the online application. So much more user-friendly.

They’re doing video conference interviews now

Eep! I interviewed last week and was accepted today ?? ! I’ll be happily attending!

jesus I am so surprised they were interviewing people this late..I assumed it was rolling and I would have no chance cause my things wouldnt be in till jan

I applied within the original time frame (before end of nov), so have no idea what happened!

Specializes in current RD, future RN.

So about a month or so ago, I was emailed saying I was placed on an alternate list.

Today they emailed me with the list of health forms and required documents to move forward with. I don't know if this is standard procedure, but hopefully this is a good thing. Has anyone from the alternate list been picked yet? Just curious

Congratulations to all the new accepted students!

Congratulations! The same happened to me except no forms were sent. So I guess I am still an alternate at this time. Smh.

Is anyone else still have issues with the health forms?? With everything going on I am not able to get an appointment for a physical. I did the background check and I was surprised that it didn't ask for a drug test. Is it still required or is it part of the physical? If someone has any answers I would appreciate it!

After losing almost all hope, I finally got called for an interview next week. Anyone else do the virtual interview and have any tips/advice?
I think I’m more nervous about an online interview than in person.

Any advice for the video interviews?

I completely agree, I would definitely be more nervous about an online interview because I would not know what to expect. I haven't been called, starting to lose my hope. Regardless, any feedback would be great. Good luck to everyone.

@vanessacmichell I first got into another nursing school and they said hospitals need a drug test within 30 days of starting clinical so that is probably why they haven’t asked for a drug test yet. We’ll probably have to get one closer to the start date.

I did a video interview! There were three other students and the director of the program. The director introduced herself, laid out the agenda, introduced the program, asked if we had questions, and then began the interview portion. She asked each of us specific questions (sometimes the same one), so there was no competitive aspect (IE we weren’t fighting for speaking time). It was pretty relaxed and reasonable. Questions varied from “give an example of a failure and how you over came it” to “name three adjectives that describe why you would make a great nurse.” In the end at least 3 of the 4 of us were accepted, so you probably have a good shot! I was also a late interviewee and I’m still SOOOOO happy I got in. Congratulations on the interview and good luck!
