SUNY Downstate ABSN 2020-2021

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone,

I've started this thread so we can discuss and share our experiences applying to SUNY's ABSN program for 2020. This is my second time applying. I waited till the very last day of the deadline to submit my application last year (I knowww) since I had taken the TEAS and had just gotten the results. However, I've already submitted my application for the upcoming year and hope to get a call for an interview. Looking forward to chatting with you all.

Sidenote: I really like the upgrade they did to the online application. So much more user-friendly.

The link didn’t work for me either. I’m going to try searching the group by it’s title. What did you name it?

Ah, yes. I marked it as private - maybe that's why?

Ok - made a tweak. The content and members are private, but the group itself is public. Pls join via link:

Oh! I see. I thought this was a "special" clinical placement program. Where are clinicals then?

It differs every semester, the clinical coordinator would organize it. I had clinicals at Bellevue, Downstate, and MAIMONIDES.

@NurseDan I was next to you! The one who reads fantasy novels to de-stress. LOL!

FYI to all: my app still says "screening in process" and was like that pretty much through the whole process. Furthermore, my admission checklist has never been updated, even after I submitted my fall grades just before xmas. So, I wouldn't put much stock in the statuses!

As far as interviews, I do want to offer this: I would recommend spending the night before doing some serious reflecting on major events in your life that have shaped you, made you learn something, or were difficult. Anything that brought you to the nursing path. The interview questions are randomly assigned, so you can't really prep answers. But as long as you have your personal, monumental moments in your brain, you will be fine. When you are asked a question, take a breath and let a memory surface. Look people in the eye and trust your story. They want to get to know you. And there are no wrong answers. I would also advise to be specific. Talk about a specific event, how it specifically made you feel, how it changed you or made you learn something. Don't be afraid to be personal.

Glad you got in! Make sure you join the FB group I set up.

^Also, these are greater tips for those who get an interview spot.

It is a special placement that you apply for before the rotations begin in the Fall. We applied at the end of June. In addition to honors programs, there is also regular rotations at maimonides and downstate hospital. These change and you have to register every semester and it's not guaranteed that you will get your first pick. This semester we also have a choice of Kings County, Kingsbrook, Bellevue, Wyckoff, Brookdale, Jamaica, Bellevue, Woodhull.

Thanks for your advice and taking the time out to answer questions. I am having a hard time deciding what to do if I get accepted as I have a child under 2, and am worried about being able to handle everything. Can you tell me what your clinical hours were/are like? The interviewer told me it was Thurs-Sunday, but are those full days, every day?

Hi! Clinical days are usually around 7-3/4pm, however up to your instructors discretion. HOWEVER, I’ve heard of special considerations where hospitals required later clinical hours (3-10pm). I highly suggest you find a responsible baby sitter in advance which is what many of my classmates did. My experience with clinicals was to expect the worst, if the unit gets REALLY busy you’ll end up staying later.

I wouldn’t worry about the “screening in process” status. It took a week for the checklist to be updated. Then it was about 2 months for my status to change from “Review by Office of Admissions” to “Under Program Review”, and then another month to get called in for an interview. My application still says “Screening in Process”; I think it’s just a general status of active applications.

What I want to know is... has anyone who has been in for an interview, then gotten notified they were rejected?

Wait...your application still says "Screening in Process"? So, then where does it say "Under Program Review"?

Back in early Dec, they sent me an email to say my application was forwarded to the program to review.

I believe there was a little line above the status checklist that said “Under Program Review” but of course now I can’t find it; I think they got rid of it for some reason.

Nice! I heard about the BK Free Clinic - the volunteer opportunity, but I thought the honors program at Maimonides was a special clinical placement where you stay throughout the program.
