SUNY Downstate ABSN 2020-2021

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone,

I've started this thread so we can discuss and share our experiences applying to SUNY's ABSN program for 2020. This is my second time applying. I waited till the very last day of the deadline to submit my application last year (I knowww) since I had taken the TEAS and had just gotten the results. However, I've already submitted my application for the upcoming year and hope to get a call for an interview. Looking forward to chatting with you all.

Sidenote: I really like the upgrade they did to the online application. So much more user-friendly.

Orientation is two parts, day 1 is school-wide and day 2 is CON. They both take up the entire day so keep your schedule cleared.

Your classes are pre-registered, you don't have a say in professor or lecture time so you must be flexible.

You have 1 week off in August, and around a month in December after finals.

A pro is that the program is very cheap compared to other schools, but its kind of messy because our old director left and there's a brand new director in charge right now. Most of the old professors are replaced with new professors so I can't say much about that.

Thanks for this info!! It's greatly appreciated. What does CON stand for? It sounds like the vacation policy follows the normal "college" program... Could you elaborate on what you mean by messy? Also, do you know when you can enroll into the honors program to ensure clinical's take place within Maimonides? And finally, is there anything you wish you knew before starting? WE ALL OWE YOU! Thank you.

Hey everyone,

1. Does anyone who has gotten accepted still have outstanding pre-reqs to complete this upcoming semester?

2. My checklist was updated last week to reflect that they have received my fall grades, but there are still three action items left unchecked. The first two are just classes I need to take next semester (which shouldn’t keep my application from moving forward for review) and the last one was a mistake on their part that they fixed by writing below the action item name that it was solved, but it hasn’t been checked off.

My application is still listed as “screening in process” despite technically being complete, and I’m getting nervous that there is some kind of confusion happening. I wrote to them a week ago but have not heard back. I do not want to hound them but I am also trying to weigh the possibility that my application hasn’t been progressed because the checklist looks incomplete (even though it isn’t).

If anyone has experienced anything similar please let me know!

@beanurse222

I wouldn’t worry about the “screening in process” status. It took a week for the checklist to be updated. Then it was about 2 months for my status to change from “Review by Office of Admissions” to “Under Program Review”, and then another month to get called in for an interview. My application still says “Screening in Process”; I think it’s just a general status of active applications.

What I want to know is... has anyone who has been in for an interview, then gotten notified they were rejected?

Thanks Episkey - helpful to know about the screening in process thing. I was assuming this is the status that changed. The status above my checklist still says “Application Status: Document received; see application checklist” however, so ... I don’t know what anything means haha.

College of nursing.

Let’s just say there’s a lot of last minute changes to schedules in regards to clinical and class times.

The MAIMONIDES honors program you’ll have to apply to and if you are selected you will complete clinicals at Maimonides. There’s also a downstate honors program if you’re interested in that.

I pretty much did a ton of research and had a good gist of the program! I would say to create a group chat with your cohort so you can share information and build bonds. My cohort had a really good friendship and that’s helpful because nursing school is STRESSFUL.

Do you know how and where we can apply to these two programs? Did you like it?

Such great advice, thank you!!

You will have a chance when you’re in the program, they’ll probably send out emails to apply to it. I didn’t apply to join because I felt the extra workload wasn’t worth it and I still ended up having a job at a major hospital. Don’t feel obligated to join a honors program, there’s a ton of other extracurriculars and what’s important is you pass each class.

Oh! I see. I thought this was a "special" clinical placement program. Where are clinicals then?

Hi all - I made a Private Facebook Group for our cohort. Pls join! Link's below!

The link doesn’t work.

Hey guys,

does anyone still have any outstanding Prereq courses to take that was accepted into the program or received an interview?
