2010 Summer GEM at Rush

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

Hello,

I am wondering if there is anyone applied at Rush for GEM 2010 summer.

I did a month ago and am waiting for an interview.

Is it too early? Is there anyone hearing from them?

Hope someone can help me with these question.

Thank you ~

If you don't mind me asking, what was some of your experience/ gpa for the program?

Did any of you have your cna and work as a cna?

I have little experience but am starting to volunteer soon. Just looking to strengthen my application.

:)

From my experience, the best thing you can do is become a CNA and get some paid experience in a hospital setting before going to nursing school. I was a CNA for a few years before starting the program and it really helped me to pick things up very quickly when it came to clinicals. It also shows your commitment to the field of nursing. I couldn't imagine starting clinical rotations without ever having any inpatient experience. That being said, if you wanted to wait, you can work as a nursing assistant at Rush without going through a formal CNA training after your med-surg clinical (3rd quarter), so you could do that later on if you wanted to to get some experience.

Volunteering helps, good/high GPA helps, especially in the sciences, but it isn't everything. People enter into this program with all sorts of different backgrounds, and it doesn't really matter what you were doing before as long as you have a pretty well rounded application and a solid ability to communicate as to why you want to pursue nursing.

Hey everyone,

I just created a facebook group for our program! Search "Rush GEM Summer 2010" and it should come up! So far I am the only member :uhoh3: , so please join :D !

I got in as well (I found out earlier this month, but was abroad and didn't have the right internet access/time to respond to this). Rush was my first choice so I cried when I got the news and called home immediately!

Jenna- My GPA from undergrad was about a 3.3 and my prereq one was maybe around the same. I volunteered at a hospital for 6 months and I interviewed about 15 nurses. Since college I also have worked for 5 years in community organizations for social justice/change. Health kept coming up in terms of an issue and it kept interesting me. Back in college I participated in reproductive and abortion rights activism and I was a social worker with young pregnant women right after college. I lived and worked in Mexico for a year and a half and I speak fluent Spanish. I think the best thing you can do to strengthen your application (and really strengthen your knowledge base) is volunteer in the health care setting. I think my regular "stats" such as GPA and GRE were average, but what aided my admission was the work I did in a community setting, my demonstrated passion for health justice and volunteering at the hospital.

Angela- you should definitely be able to find places for less than $1000 in the area. I live in the Pilsen neighborhood (which some might advice as "off limits" because it is a bit rough at times) and I pay $600 for a 2-bedroom. But you can get closer to campus and even in more posh areas for under $1000. Any more info on what you want in terms of where you want to live?

Hi everyone, I recently applied to Rush's GEM program for the 2011 winter. Does anyone who is currently in the program have any advice or thoughts about the program? How do you think it compares to DePaul's direct-entry MSN? Also, is there anyone else out there who has applied for the winter 2011 cohort?

Hi,

I cannot give my feedback yet because I will just be starting in June. I am very excited and after all my research I feel Rush offers alot! I know there are previous posts about the differences with depaul so if you look up a ways you may see something. If you have any questions during the process let me know.

I applied to Winter 2011!

Hi everyone! I'll be starting at Rush in the GEM program in a few weeks! Congratulations to others who made it and good luck to future applicants!

I have a couple questions to ask new and old GEM students..

Does anyone know if scholarship money reduces loans? Or does it reduce grant money first?? These loans are scaring me a little...hope it's worth it!

If anyone is looking for a roommate, mine is moving out August 1st and I'll need another one! I live in Lincoln Square which is about a 20-30 minute commute depending on traffic, so I'm thinking of moving closer to Rush when my lease runs out (also Aug. 1st.). Especially if classes/clinicals require me to drive down there every day of the week! I heard some classes are online though.. Rent here is $1500 for a two bedroom plus den. Anyway, if anyone is interested, let me know!

Can't wait to meet everyone. :)

I applied for Winter 2011 too.. Interviewed and hopefully will hear back good news soon!:)

Mg219 How was the interview? I am guessing it is the typical format... "Why do you want to be a nurse? Describe a challenging time, etc" Did they tell you when you could expect to hear back?

Hi ABosslet..yes, the interview was pretty much your basic questions, people mentioned the questions in postings. Also it was fairly casual:) They said that we should hear back in July. Are you waiting to interview?

Hi Mg219, Sorry I never replied to your post. I am interviewing tomorrow morning. Good luck!

Np! Thats so exciting, GOOD LUCK! Let me know how it goes..
