4.0 Students...do people ever say...

Published

"Just because you are book smart doesn't mean you'll be a good nurse."

I HATE it when people say this to me!!!!! I am well aware that there is more to being a nurse than being "book smart." Having worked as a CNA and Home Care Aide for 12 years, I DO have more to offer than just "book smarts." However, the book smarts are what will get me into nursing school. Also, if one isn't able to pass the classes, one will never get the chance to take and pass the NCLEX and actually BE a good nurse!

The attitude I have gotten from nurses I know as well as other students seems to imply that because I AM book smart, I will NOT be a good nurse. I resent this.

BTW, I do not brag about my grades. The reason so many in my community know I have a 4.0 is because the President's and Dean's Lists are read on the radio and printed in every little newspaper here.

WHAT makes YOU think the only reason for those 3 people in your class not come back this year was because they didn't receive a 4.0 like you?????? Who do YOU think YOU are??!! There ARE things that can happen in life that can cause a person to take a semster off, you know!! Good for you that your life is so blessed and perfect that you can spend every waking minute studying.

There! How do you like it!!??

Wow, I think you totally misunderstood what she was saying. Those people tried to put her down for having a 4.0, most likely becasue their grades weren't that great and they were jealous. Them not going back to school kind of confirms that. In my opinion you have your own issues if you freak out over something like this anyway.

What i think about with someone else's grades, is over hearing them say that just passing is all that matters. To some grad programs, the grades that you get matter. I just hate that if they think that way, apply for a grad school, and find out the hard way that the school wants a certain grade or GPA.

That was my point exactly. People could change their mind, want to pursue a CRNA or whatever, and be excluded because they believed all of these statements that grades don't matter.

I did not start this thread to offend anyone. When posted, I was hurt over things some people had said to me-not on this board, but in person. I would never put another person down because of their grades-good or bad. I agree that a 4.0 nurse could be a bad nurse, and a 2.0 nurse could be a good nurse. In my situation, if I don't maintain a 4.0, I may never get the chance to find out if I would be a good nurse or not, because I most likely won't be accepted to the program. Anyway, it's all about doing your best. Right now, my best is getting me A's-that may not be the case once I get into the program.

Anyway, my whole point wasn't about whether a 4.0 is better or worse than a 2.9 or a 3.5 or anything else. My point was that while the 4.0 isn't going to MAKE me a good nurse, it also isn't going to PREVENT me from being a good nurse.

Not necessarily. Many Southern California schools have switched to GPA preference, meaning those with the highest pre-req scores are accepted into nursing school.

In order for each school to do this, they each had to individually PROVE to the state that students who had better grades performed better in nursing school (including clinicals). Each school had to compile a statistically valid study for this and prove their case before they switched to GPA criteria.

Since at least a dozen schools did these studies, and each of them proved higher scores = better performance, there's got to be something to this grade thing.

Of course, there are always exceptions. But the statistics do demonstrate higher GPAs = more successful nursing grads.

And once again, if you want to become a CRNA, one of the highest levels, if not the highest level of nursing ... C=RN will NOT get you there.

Right, to get in....to be accepted....you stand a better chance with a higher GPA. However, once in you don't have to half kill yourself trying to maintain that 4.0. It's good when you can but if you can't, no biggie. C really DOES =RN in the nursing courses themselves, not in prereqs.

I agree a C= an RN..but one more reason to do the best you can is $$$. I went in with a 4. and maintained it for my first yr of nursing...my second yr of nursing was paid for by 3 scholarships and I had enough to spare to pay off half of the Stafford loans I rec'd the first yr..My husband made too much $$ (ha ha esp since we were seperated) for me to get aid or scholarships based on need..so it was loans or academic scholarships..:) It was nice getting out of school with very little debt.. Erin

You know? I basically feel that the "motto" C=RN was "given" so that students who get those kinds of grades, who are C averages, wouldnt' be so hard on themselves when they don't get that A or B. I do the best I can and if I happen to finish up a semester with a C, I'll be happy with it. It just doesn't matter as much to me as how much I learn how to do in hand's on care. Oftentimes we know more than we think but simply choose that wrong answer (over-analyzing again) on an exam and don't do so well on the academic part...doesn't mean the C student isn't as smart as the A or B student or less of a nurse...just means she got a C.

I'm going to stick by my guns on this one....C=RN....if you get better, congrats to you and more power to you. If you get less, you still passed so congrats to you too!

What EVER! Perhaps they had other things going on in their lives?? I'm sure it's not just because they didn't receive a 4.0 like you.

You know, your posts really make this board look bad. I have recomended this board to so many of my fellow nursing students, but it's people like you that really embarass me. Makes me wish I haden't said anything about this board to anyone. You sound very bitter. Good luck in life!

Yet again you've been reported.

stop it already, both of you!! if i were your teacher, i'd haul you both down to the office!! i do not want to see another reported post from either of you. you were already warned about personal attacks by two other moderators in another thread. i am tempted to suspend you both, until you learn to 'play nice!' :angryfire

Yet again you've been reported.

I've reviewed your record, and have reported examples of your insults and rediculous conclusions. You seem to have a history of disrupting legitimate threads. Please stop your annoying behavior. I responded to this thread to make a point to all that many of your comments are unwelcome.

wow. interesting thread

My personal opinion is that I am going to strive to achieve the best possible grades. I want to go on for my masters, so a bunch of C's are just not going to be good enough. Although I do agree that C=RN, that is not a motto I am going to live by. If you go into the program with that thinking, you are probably only going to get C's, because you know thats all you need to graduate. I think that there are so many resources out there nowadays that students who "have trouble" taking tests can learn to do better on tests (i've read that explanation for C's all over this board) you just have to want it and work at it. And I have to agree that your grades are personal, and nobody should even care what you got!

I hope this finds everyone having a great day, and working hard!! :) :)

I have some friends in class and we quiz each other and such. if I say anything about " oh I need to review more" or " darn how could I have missed that one?" I get comments such as " oh like it matters, you only got one wrong." I feel like I can't say anything about studying or tests without getting a negative comment.
