4.0 Students...do people ever say...

"Just because you are book smart doesn't mean you'll be a good nurse."

I HATE it when people say this to me!!!!! I am well aware that there is more to being a nurse than being "book smart." Having worked as a CNA and Home Care Aide for 12 years, I DO have more to offer than just "book smarts." However, the book smarts are what will get me into nursing school. Also, if one isn't able to pass the classes, one will never get the chance to take and pass the NCLEX and actually BE a good nurse!

The attitude I have gotten from nurses I know as well as other students seems to imply that because I AM book smart, I will NOT be a good nurse. I resent this.

BTW, I do not brag about my grades. The reason so many in my community know I have a 4.0 is because the President's and Dean's Lists are read on the radio and printed in every little newspaper here.

Don't let it get you. I got plenty of jests because I graduated my MSN/ARNP program with a 4.0. Alot of "Well who did YOU sleep with?". Many also told me that you simply could not go that far and keep a 4.0. I may not be able to spell, but I do know how to be a RN/NP. :D

And for the very derogatory comment made toward the LPN. Tisk tisk tisk. Obviously you were told that LPN stands for Lets Pretend Nurse. Real shame. Hope you'll remember this when one of 'those LPN's" saves your rear :)

Dave, who minds you that RN also stands for Registered Nitwit. Just check MY Card :)

I was told this by 3 ppl in my class. Ironically, they didn't come back this year.

WHAT makes YOU think the only reason for those 3 people in your class not come back this year was because they didn't receive a 4.0 like you?????? Who do YOU think YOU are??!! There ARE things that can happen in life that can cause a person to take a semster off, you know!! Good for you that your life is so blessed and perfect that you can spend every waking minute studying.

There! How do you like it!!??

Urhm, bad day, guys?:uhoh21:

And, NEVER have I said that I would EVER look down my nose at someone for going for an LPN instead of BSN! I was simply AFFENDED because the poster insinuated that because a few people didn't attend the next semester of her program they didn't receive a 4.0 like she did. There are countless reasons why someone might have to end a program as you should KNOW!

And for the record, i do NOT insuate. You, however, are putting words into ppl's 'fingers', and resorts to insults in order to state your opinion on this thread.

The people that didn't come back completely flunked out, by receiving 1.3 to 15. GPAs

Never did an insult come out of my fingers. And I'm assuming that you know for a fact that these three flunked out??

ANYWAY.

The problem with my classmates now is that they think that a GPA or a final grade in ANY class does not matter, as long as they pass with the 86 (the lowest grade for passing you can get in this program).

My point is, employers DO look at the grades, they have that option, even though people in my class have been told this, a few still think that if they get a 68 on a CV test, then that's fine. If they're wanting to work in cardiology, that employer might ask for the grade on that subject.

And now to take my "blessed" and "perfect" self on to my 16 hour double shift BEFORE the 6 hour class day tomorrow :roll .

Wow. :uhoh21: :uhoh3: Some thread! Whew!

The only one you need to please and do your best for is

Y-O-U.

If a 4.0 is what YOU want, I say give it your all and GO for it !

If a lower score is your very BEST, then you did your BEST... in the end, you know you gave your all...

What matters is that you give your all and do your very best.

Then you can live with YOU.. and be happy with you.

When we're happy with ourselves, we can be happy with and around others.

Gee....... life is too sweet to jump on each other like this.

Y'all need a VACATION. :chuckle

May I interject here?

I'm one of those who lives by the motto C=RN. I started out with a 4.0 GPA before my first semester of actual nursing. I now stand at a 3.5. Is it because I don't care as much? Is it because I'm not as smart as straight A students? No, it simply means that I'm an individual and my life doesn't run the same as theirs. I'd be tickled as punch to maintain a 4.0 but I'm not going to kick myself if I don't. My priority in the nursing program (ADN RN) is to graduate and to give quality nursing care in a clinical setting.

I do, myself, see that a lot of assumptions have been made in this thread...Is there no way to rethink the way it comes off? There really IS no way to tell why these students didn't return. Some may have had financial difficulties that kept them from returning....some may have had personal reasons....some may have, indeed, failed. No way of knowing.....now, is there?

Point is, nursing is nursing....be it NP or LPN (LVN) or RN or BSN or MSN or......

Now, c'mon guys, aren't we all in this together? Kiss and make up? :kiss

There are some people that are 4.0 nurses that I think will be horrible nurses. Now that being said, I have very high grades and am quite proud of them. It isn't about the grade, book smart or not. The 4.0s that are problems are the ones that are more concerned about grades than care for patients. That's where you can get in trouble as a nurse. You can't be a perfectionist concerned with making your goals only. You have to be flexible and look at other people's ways of thinking. The 4.0s that I have seen that will make horrible nurses are too preoccupied with the process and not the patient. You can definitely and always be both. It's ludicrous to think that you will be a bad nurse because of 4.0 grades, but I can also see how some times being grade obssessed would reflect on bad nursing care. It's not about the grades though it's the attitude that goes with it.
