There is a student in my program who never comes to class, except on days of tests and presentations, she even has other students drop off her assignmnets. She was at one Patho, and one mental health class the whole semester. I don't know how she passes (I know that she does with very poor marks). I was wondering if there are other students who you know of who do this.
I know that every student misses class on occasions, but not every class. She has never missed a clincial day.
She was almost caught last year when she was not signed up for a group and met with the program co-ordiantor in which she outright lied to them and they bought it.
How condifdent would you be with her as your nurse.
Just venting,
Kristen
I can understand your frustrations. We have a policy where I go that you can't miss class unless it is a valid excuse. So no one misses classes that much. I know some have been frustrated with me since though I attended every class, I rarely read the material. (main reason 'cause I also work full-time and have two small children, which took up a lot of my spare time.) And I still passed the classes with B's. Now they are frustrated with me because I only spend a total of 5 days, which totaled only 10 hours, studying for the NCLEX-PN exam and still passed. I didn't mean to tell them that but it slipped out of my mouth since I was in a daze when I discovered I had passed. Oops! We all learn differently. The only thing that would irk me if someone who never shows up for class and expects me to give them my notes.
So try not to let it bother you and have a great nursing school year!!

Guys, does your lecture instructor(s) take attendance?? Do they call out names and mark you are there? Cause I noticed in my 1st yr, there were a few students that never showed up, but the instructors never took roll call, and I don't think the instructors even knew.
Both the graduate programs I was in, 1974-76 & 2000-03, took attendance. And both universities and programs, had attendance policies. Without good cause, you could be dropped from a class for failure to attend all class sessions. I fully endorse this practice, both as a student and as a former instructor.

I had to post a reply to this subject.
I am one of those students who misses quite a bit of class. I have some health problems, as well as elderly parents, one of whom is in and out of the hospital in another city.
I don't want to miss class, but sometimes I have to put my parents and my health first. I have come to clinicals in so much pain that I have cried in the restroom, but clinical attendance is mandatory. i didn't plan for these diversions to happen, and I am proud that I have continued my education despite them.
I have been discussed in class, talked down to and generally been treated horribly by some students because of my absences.
My point is this: I am the one that has to work harder, and play catch up." I maintain a high "B' overall average.
Plae don't judge, sometimes there are legitimite reasons someone misses class, and for the most part they have to work harder to maintain and retain grades and knowledge.
Just my view,

Your input was needed here. It emphasizes why we shouldn't judge people, as we don't always understand the whole story. In other words, sometimes we just need to MYOB and take care of what truly affects us. Best of luck in your studies; all your hard work will someday pay off!
Precisely. If it bugs you, then don't help her.For the life of me, I do not understand this attitude of "tattling" or being consumed with what other people may/may not be doing. Granted, it has been over 20 years since I graduated, but I don't remember having the time or energy to worry about whether or not my classmates were punctual/attending classes/smoking cigarettes, etc., etc., etc. There have been so many threads lately started by students/new nurses who do just this; I'm almost afraid of them (thankfully, I work in a specialty that doesn't take new grads, so this isn't really a problem for me).
And for the record, I am admitting up front that I bagged lecture with my best friend to go see "Return of the Jedi" when it was first released.
:yeahthat:
I learn better on my own. I do great when I read and study. I go to lecture because I paid for it, but it is rarely an effective use of my time.
Anyhoo, I'm ususally too busy worrying about my own performance to wonder who showed up, or who's gossiping or who's cheating.
In other words, sometimes we just need to MYOB and take care of what truly affects us.
This is true. It's the instructor's business who does and doesn't do what in school. We had an attendance policy, but I wasn't the one enforcing it.
When I was in school attending lecture was an important part of the class, as rarely would a test question come from anywhere else but the lectures. But if I could have still made A's by only showing up for tests, I surely would have done just that.
If I could get straight A's without showing up for lecture, I surely would do it. Unfortunately, I just received my information packet and absences and tardiness are not tolerated at my school. If I'm late, it will be counted as an absence, so I will be in class every week on time, God willing. Honestly, even in my prereqs, I was so focused on getting the material that I could care less who showed up for class or who got which grade. On top of everything else I have to worry about why would I want to add on something that I have no control over and is really not my concern? I have been successful thus far because I look straight ahead, pay close attention to what the instructor is saying, and try to get the most out of every moment. If I start worrying about who isn't there, or who got what grade, then I'm missing out on something happening at the front of the room.
I take it that those who missed class did not have pop quizzes and in-class assignments? It is a very costly thing to miss classes in my school. If someone wants to miss it, fine, but they may miss a lot of points! My teachers do take attendance, for financial aid reasons, but they rarely say anything about missing. We actually had 2 pop quizzes in one day, though, after our teacher noticed that some students skipped out after lunch. It makes it too costly for me to miss, that's for sure!
I also fell asleep one time during a lecture and fell out of my seat and onto the floor (and I was sitting in the front row).It takes a long time to recover your dignity after something like that.
(I can just hear some people thinking "Thank God she doesn't work with me!")
i fell asleep during A&P lecture. I was in the front row DROOLING, i was so out. (i had taken a half a dose of nyquil for some relief of my cold symptoms and thought half a dose would only help my symptoms and not put me to sleep. HA! can you tell I had no idea how drugs work?!) :rotfl:
P.S. this was last winter and I still hear about it!
I didn't go to my pre-req classes very often. For statistics and physiology, I only showed up on test days and still managed to 4.0. What's the point when your professors don't speak english? As for chemistry and anatomy, I probably went 2/3 days a week. Calc, I only went on test days. Microbiology- I had to go everyday because it was a summer class and it had lab but lectures were incredibly boring and during them I just wrote up my labs. I think that with the exceptions of labs/fundamentals and clinicals, class (lecture) attendance should not be required. I wish my lectures were exciting and motivated me to go since I pay so much money, but they aren't and I have maintained a 4.0 with only attending about 40-50% of my classes.

I didnt mean Every Tueday and Thursday night. I'm talking 2 or 3 nights out of the year maybe missing an hour or so of lecture. I dont have any choice but to schedule my lectures on Tuesday and Thursday becuase that is the only schedule that is available for their nursing program.
I already have two Bachelor degrees so I know that missing an hour of lecure 2 or three times a year will not affect my grades. I was just wondering if anyone else has had to deal with a similar circumstance.
