Student feeling not educated

Hi there. More and more each day I become a little more panicked. I am in pre-nursing right now, I have just a few pre-reqs left. But when I look here on this site or hear others speaking using abreviations, I am completely lost. I thought I knew enough to help me and get me going in the program. I am afraid that I am going to be sitting in a class and they are talking and I will not know what is going on. I dont know if I explained this well enough, I apologize. Is there a way to prepare myself before I get into the actual nursing classes. I read nursing/medical books now when I have time but I do not know if that is helping.
Can anyone suggest anything? Thanks.

Don't worry, hun. You'll learn as you go along in nursing school.

It will all come with time. We all start somewhere and as nurses we continue to learn every day even if we aren't in school.

I remember listening to report when I was in my first nursing clinicals...and was so in awe of nurses speaking the terminology I didn't know. Every field has its own jargon. You will learn certain things in school, and then even more on the job. If you have time, it might help to take medical terminology. I did, and it was a fun and helpful class. But if you don't have the time for that, don't worry. One day you'll be speaking the language too. :)

Sherichance, it's the same for me the first day of every class. I look at the syllabus and course documents and think I'll NEVER learn all this...then lo and behold, the end of the semester looms and I HAVE learned it :)

If we all knew it all already, there'd be no need for school..hehe

I used to feel the same way you did. Without even knowing it I started to pick up the terminology. It happens unconsciously.

Relax. You learn all that stuff in nursing, not in prereqs.

Please try to not sweat the small stuff, or you'll be panicing every single day. It's going to get a whole lot more stressful than this and you'd better learn to deal. LOL

Keep in mind that nursing school is (in my opinion) just the bascis. You will learn something EVERY DAY!! You will also learn more when you get into a nursing job (assistant, extern, or out of school as a RN). Relax and save the worrying for a test!! Most of us felt lost at the beginning. :chair: Wait till you get into the actual nursing classes!! :crying2: :eek: You'll do great, just try not to stress too much right now. :)

I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone! I am also in the "pre-phase" of my program and I question myself every single day. I felt pulled to become a nurse and even now I just feel like that is where I belong, even though I am not sure why. I always question my abilities. I think of things like the abbreviations, memorizing, clinicals, the licensing exam and even working as a nurse and wonder how in the world will I ever be capable for such a responsibility. But I cannot walk away from it. I am sure the concerns that new students like us are having are completely normal because we are worried since we have never been there. It is unknown to us.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that there is someone else out here who is with you in this. When do you start your program? My actual nursing classes will begin June 2005. (For the type of program, I have to have all non-nursing courses done b/c there will only be nursing classes every other weekend.) Keep in touch and we can get through this together along with all the other students on this board! Let's look forward to the lifetime of learning we will be exposed to! Take care!

The purpose of Nursing school is to teach you those (and a lot of other) things you ask about.

Your pre nursing courses are prepairing you for the next step.

No one was born a nurse. We all went to nursing school to learn what we know.

Nursing school will teach you. When you graduate I will be happy to see you apply where I work, as will everyone. I can remember looking through books and feeling that I can never learn all of that. I went to nursing school after a long time of not being in school, my youngest was born in between 1st and 2nd year of school. She is 13, I am now 47 and love nursing.
