I used a storage clipboard all through clinical and preceptorship and I really liked having everything in one place when I needed it. Always have extra sheets on hand just in case (water/coffee spill, etc.). Carry a "brain" of some sort...most nurses use shift sheets but until I developed my own style I used a little notebook to right everything in so I didn't have to take my clipboard into rooms. Always have a handful of pens (they tend to grow legs and walk away).
This thread is also very helpful to new students

I've been wondering about storage clipboards, as well, and I even looked at them at Office Max the other day. Thanks for asking about them OP, and I will be very interested in the responses you get. :-)

Hello,
The other day in clinical I saw a doctor who had an awesome metal one that fit in his jacket pocket. It opened up and then folded nicely in half, I was intrigued when I noticed the whole outside of it had useful lab values and other clinical stuff on it. He told me it was called white coat clip board. Google it and on the site they have ones for especially for nurses, you can even get your name engraved on it. Hope that's what you were looking for because I know I'm thinking about getting one.

Buy multicolored pens like these. It saves from having to carry around more than one pen. BIC Ballpoint Pen, Retractable, Med, Multi, Pk 3 - Pens - 35Y072|BICMMP31 - Grainger Industrial Supply

I would not purchase a clipboard until your know your facility policy. At my hospital, once you set something down in a room it has to be left there and can not be taken out - to cut down on disease transmission. I had a clipboard I brought the first day and had to leave it at home after that. I am a fan of colored pens as well as PP mentioned.

Some people love it. I would make sure it is the clipboard with the information written on it. I've seen it for 10-25 dollars so shop around. I think there is a few of them floating around. It'll have useful information like lab values and rule of 9s. I never used a clipboard, but I may get the WhiteCoat clipboard.
I also bought a labs, pediatric vital signs, maternity due date, and ekg measuring card. I keep them behind my ID badge.
The Pocketbook for a little bit later. I bought the critical care version and I still use my paramedic pocketbook.
Stethoscope watch. You need to have your stethoscope with you and I hate watches, so it was perfect for me. I bought the analog version of this: Cherokee Slip Thru Stethoscope Watch I liked it because it stays with me. I bought four actually. 2 in white and 2 in black. It's also easier with a small child to take vitals.
Use a nurse on a stick (vital machine) for the clock as a last resort.
Practice BPs all the time. I use it all the time when I don't believe the machine.
Get a good stethoscope. I like my Littman Select but I love my Cardiology III. Black Friday is the best time, but make sure you also get it engraved on the head and not the tubing. Tubing costs like 40 bucks for a stethoscope that costs over 100 dollars. It's easier to replace.
Pants with pockets if you are allowed. I love my Aviator scrub pants, but not a fan of the top. I use them both for work and clinical. Check and see if you are allowed cargo scrub pants.

Mechanical pencils, colored pens, lots of different color highlighters, post it notes and those post it tabby things to mark pages, small notebook that will fit in your scrub top. I did the clipboard thing for my first semester and about half of my second. But when we started being assigned multiple patients it got to be too cluttered. What I did was get a 1" binder with dividers that have storage pockets. I have one divider for each patient's paperwork and I can snap their MAR right there with it if I am passing meds on that patient. And I have plenty of room for extra paperwork. green34 said pants with pockets....YES...the more space the better.
I bought the WhiteCoat clipboard. It looks neat. I want something to help myself stay better organized. Plus the fact that it fits in my pocket is a bonus
