StonyBrook ABSN: Class of 2021

Published

Hi all,

Thought I'd start a thread here so we can connect. I am in the process of taking my pre-reqs and plan to submit my application by the Oct 2019 deadline for the Summer 2020 start.

I'm planning on attending the Sept 19 info session on campus - anyone else going?

OMG congratulations ! How did they contact you??

Hey!! They called me and then 2 days later I got an e-mail from them as well. When I did speak to them on the phone they said they were pretty behind.

Hi all - I was waitlisted and recently offered a spot. I am going to reject b/c I’ve accepted elsewhere at my other top choice. Good luck to whoever I give my seat to ?

Hi everyone, I am preparing to apply to the ABSN program for SBU. Would anyone who were accepted mind sharing their stats? I want to know what they would be focusing in, like GPA or are they actually more hollistic?

Hey! I have a BS in health science from Stony Brook. My cum GPA - 3.31 and pre req GPA - 3.75. I honestly think they are doing a more holistic approach because it seems like in the past most people that got in had high GPA's.

Hi! Thank you for your answer! Did you just get into the program?? CONGRATS!! I was just worried because my pre req GPA would be like 3.5 and I was wondering if that would be high enough ?

Yes, thank you! I wouldn't be too worried. I didn't think I had a chance getting in and felt like I was wasting my time. I think if you make sure you have a strong, unique personal statement and good letters of req that could really help you!

Thank you for our answer!! Wish you luck!! Your answer has helped me so much!! If you really don't mind, would it be possible for me to take a look at your personal statement? Or would that be too much ?

Hey, so I got in with a 3.4 Cum and 3.75 pre req GPA. I also have an EMT license and serve in Army Reserves so that gave me maybe a little edge but not a lot. I think it was my personal statement and letter of recommendation that made me stand out. The interview is really important as well. They used to be all about grades but its more holistic now ever since the new director started so I am sure you will kill it.Good Luck.

Thank you so much for your answer! Have you heard of anyone getting in with like 3.5 as their pre req GPA? I am just wondering if that ever happened ? Would it be okay for you give me like little bit of detail on what you wrote for personal statement and who you got your letter of recommendation from?

Hi I'm new to the thread but got accepted to the program. I had a 3.27 cumulative GPA and 3.7 pre-req GPA when I applied although it is higher now. I thought my low cumulative GPA would hurt me but I knew someone in the program who had a similar one and got in previously. I had over 500 hours of volunteer experience as an EMT and a doula. I am also on the e-board of clubs I am apart of. I also had on-campus roles such as research assistant, intern, and TA. Those are just things on my resume which I think helped because it does seem like they are focusing less on grades and more on the applicant as a whole.

That is great! Thank you for your answer! Do you perhaps know anyone whose pre req GPA was 3.5? I am just hearing everyone having 3.75.. ? I am quite relieved by the fact that now they are looking at the applicant as a whole.

I only know a limited amount of people who have gone through the program but I unfortunately do not know their pre-req GPAs. I don't think a 3.5 would be a negative remark but it just might help to have other areas that can be a strong point too.
