StonyBrook ABSN: Class of 2021

Hi all,

Thought I'd start a thread here so we can connect. I am in the process of taking my pre-reqs and plan to submit my application by the Oct 2019 deadline for the Summer 2020 start.

I'm planning on attending the Sept 19 info session on campus - anyone else going?

Hi!

I submitted my application in early August. I am eagerly awaiting October.

I work at the hospital currently and I unfortunately can not make any of the info sessions :( but hopefully when you go maybe you can share some of the info you get? I really wish I could attend one.

Hi! Happy to see this thread.

I also am applying (my last reference was submitted ~10 days ago). I don't think I can attend any of the info sessions, but am hoping I can squeeze one in. I'd also love to hear info you get at the session, @chanuts!

I am quite nervous about this!

Hi All,

I applied mid-August to the accelerated program and also the basic bach program. I attended an info session in May and thought it was pretty helpful, they really emphasized grades over anything else.

I don't have any previous healthcare experience which I originally thought would hurt my application, but at the info session I was told that it won't have much bearing on it. I think I still have the hand out at home if anyone wants a copy!

I would definitely like a copy if you still have it!

do you happen to know what their typical GPA requirement is? I know they say 3.0 on their website but I’m wondering if they are looking more for higher 3 GPA’s.

Hi all! Currently applying to the program now...I know the deadline is oct 3. Do you guys know if it is rollling admissions or they start reviewing after deadline is completed?

The info packet is basically everything they have on their website, so if you're able to attend a session I would recommend it. From what I remember, 3.0 is their minimum but ideally they're looking for candidates above 3.0.

@lobo92 thank you for sharing the document

I'm heading out to attend the info session at 1:30pm today soon. I'll ask the questions posted here if I can and will post my learnings when I get back later today!

It might be a tad deceiving. I spoke with a friend who works in the nursing programs dept and she was saying they cut most applications under 3 without looking at them at all ?

really unfortunate if they don’t look at your work history either. Many applicants have around a 3 or under 3.5 but have a lot of clinical experience through work.

Thank youuuuuu ?

I think work history and clinical experience will definitely help your application but a lack of that experience won't necessarily hurt your application.

Just got back from the info session. They will review all applications once the deadline closes so they can compare the entire applicant pool at once (admission decisions are NOT rolling).

For the accelerated and basic baccalaureate programs, their admission criteria is:

1. 3 Recommendation letters submitted online
2. Cumulative GPA from all schools attended (undergrad if applicable plus pre-requisites and any other coursework completed).

  • The minimum GPA for your application to be considered is 2.8 however the students who received admissions offers in last year's class had an average GPA around 3.5

3. Cumulative GPA from your pre-requisite science courses only (Anatomy + Physiology I+II, Microbiology, Chemistry). You must have 3 of the 4 of these classes completed by the application deadline in order to be considered, no exceptions. If you don't have 3 by Oct 3, your application won't be reviewed and it was suggested you should try for the basic baccalaureate program (deadline Jan 9, 2020)

  • Cumulative pre-req sciences GPA of admitted students last year was 3.7-3.8
